Why do budget airlines like Vietjet charge high fees for overweight luggage?

And since I am complaining about travel nonsense... I paid 24usd to have a CHECK bag. Weight limit 15kg apparently. I am 5 kilo over... The fee is 1700 baht. Vietjet is like a Bangkok taxi driver who refuses to use the meter.

Edit: check bag and 15kg limit. I don't know how I made BOTH of those errors. I am going to blame vietjet.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses a user's frustration with Vietjet Airways for charging high fees for exceeding the baggage weight limit of 15 kg, with a penalty of 1700 baht for being 5 kg over. Following the original complaint, numerous comments highlight the importance of adhering to airline rules and the common practice of budget airlines charging for excess baggage. Many respondents emphasize that users should be aware of weight limits before traveling to avoid unexpected fees.

One reason why I don’t fly budget airlines, after all the ++ add ons, I might as well just get a regular airline that gives you luggage allowance and food.

I think all of the airlines from Chiang Rai to Bangkok are budget.
Paul ***********
And rightly so...

I use Vietjet quote a lot to travel to SKL to go to work and my company has to pay more on my ticket for my offshore bag which is typically 25kg plus
Did *****
There is no 15kg limit, you paid for a 15kg allowance. Next time read what you choose / pay for before booking 🤣

What a joke post.

that is called being pedantic. It makes you unpopular at parties.
Did *****
@Jack ***************
I guess you booked on Booking website (they often just have 1 option of 15kg for checked bag with no further option available , bit silly imho) instead of using the airline's website, where you get more options (20kg, 30kg). It's useful to compare. Pointing out facts isn’t pedantic—it’s called being helpful. If understanding what I pay for makes me unpopular at parties, I’ll gladly take that over being unprepared and overcharged.
William ******
Yes, you’re so right. I’ve experienced & noticed what you say.

It’s a crazy money grabbing world now, much lacking in common sense & general understanding on a one to one basis.

I have flown wit Air Asia, so many times, their book in staff can be extremely difficult & lack in common sense.

They like the power.

Vietjet Airways is one of the absolute worst to ever do it.

You said carry on bag. Obviously, you meant a checked bag. Carry on limit is 7kg. for Vietjet. My wife and I make sure not to exceed this limit. Most international air travel limits for a checked bag is 23kg. Never expect a break at the counter. Bags get weighed, policies are in writing. In English.

A carry on bag with a 30 kg limit? I wouldn't want to be on your flight mate, the overhead compartments will all break.

Oh and yes of course, if your bag weighs more than some limit (doesn't matter which) you have a pay a penalty. Duh.

Take the extra stuff put it in your pockets, redistribute later. Or, take out stuff, tell them you will leave it, then don’t leave it… i’ve gone through this with Air ASIA before it’s easy to get around. Or you could just pack your bag and not put extra weight into it. What I don’t understand is they weigh your bag and make a big deal out of it at the counter then afterwards you walk around and nobody seems to care or you buy 20 pounds worth of duty free crap or shopping in the airport and a huge shopping bag and nobody says a word it almost makes no sense in times. I’ve worked in the airline industry 45 years and believe me it’s a crazy business and they now nickel and dime you for everything at all the carriers not just the budget ones.

I always wonder how do they know the weight of the plane unless they weigh the passengers? When they charge so much for a few kilo.of bag, than why does a 40kg passenger pay the same fare as a 140kg passenger who really needs 2 seats? Some people are carrying a whole extra person around on their body but they pay the same and take up half of your seat if you are unlucky to sit next to them! Not fair really.
David **********
All the airlines are like this these days. Especially the cheap tickets. They get you with ridiculous luggage costs. Always weigh your luggage beforehand. It's always cheap to pay for extra luggage BEFORE arriving at airport. If you have to pay at rhe counter it's almost always a ridiculously high price. Last resort I use in emergency if caught out is I go and "repack" .... put as many heavy things in my pockets as possible, wear many clothes from the bag until it comes down to the limit. But 5kg over is a lot not so easy. Have a travel scale for checking weights to remove this stress from travelling.
Jim ***********

Mikkel *******
They have had me move things from the checked in suitcase over to my carry-on because the checked in was a few kg over.. It's going on the same plane 😂

Also.. And I know this is probably a controversial opinion. But I don't understand why the guy checking in in front of me, who is weighing 150kg, and maxes out the luggage allowance, pays the regular price, but me at 70kg has to pay for a few kg over the limit on the luggage.

I honestly think they should sell the tickets based on total weight. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The airline should have just charge 5 baht or waive off the excess weight or could suggest the excess 5kg go on the next flight .
Tim ******
The price depends on your destination.

If you book a 1-stop flight with airport transit, the luggage goes to the final destination. Means more than one flight and therefore higher price per kg.
Jack ****************
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Tim *****
nope- one stop. 90 minute flight. There is no mechanism to customize your weight- and my crap weighs what it ways. I don't care about an upcharge. I find the idea of a check bag limit of 15k a bit offensive- but being 30% over weight leading to a 300% price increase is what I think is unreasonable. There is also no mechanism to just say "2 bags"

same for me as well, I got stung for £500 for excess luggage month or so back when bringing back marketing materials which to be fair out us way over the weight limit
Martin ********
@Jon **********
which local limits are these then?; The days of flexibility and smalll charges have long gone. THAI might still be a bit more lax, but the rest operating are hot on weight limits.

These 15kg limits have become more common place, because people often travel with 20-25kg sonits opened up a new way of gaining more revenue.

Simple way of avoiding it, check your ticket conditions before flying .

I think you simply miss the point, this persons expectations and mine as well from decades of flying locally in Southeast Asia are that overweight is acceptable, but against stated rules, this news item is newsworthy and a public service, and yes I will certainly investigate it by asking around if things have changed next time I fly, restating and moralizing about obvious rules that have been routinely broken in the past which this thread is filled with has little utility, unlike this man's personal experience, which does have utility 🤣
Martin ********
@Jon **********
well my experience over the last 3 decades is different, it's changed a lot, particularly in the last 5 or 6 years with regards to these rules are implemented. I dunno, I am on a plane at least twice a month and that is my personal experience.

Exactly. Plus, we've all seen the other passengers board flights with: big-ass, expandable carry-ons, plus a backpack, plus a shopping bag. I confess to having gone over and being charged. Though I never brought a caravan of pack camels like some people get away with and I just sheepishly paid up. Because, yeah, the rules are the rules. Just haphazardly enforced.
