My wife and I come here for six months each year - this is our sixth year. Each year my wife leaves the US on her US passport and enters Thailand on her Thai passport. When we leave she reverses the process. We always go through immigration together since we are married. No problems so far.

And I am sure that you are aware that you can purchase either a single reentry permit or a multi reentry permit.

I think that you are confusing an extension of stay for the purpose of retirement with a non imm o-a multi entry visa. The non imm o-a is obtained in your home country via a Thai Embassy or Consulate. If you are currently in Thailand you would apply for an extension of stay based on retirement. That is good for one year. At the end of that year you will apply for a new extension of stay. If you wish to leave the country during that year you can purchase either a single reentry permit or a multi entry reentry permit.

Everything I read says “Applicant must be 50 years of age or over.”

agreed. It is transitional, in the sense that it is the only visa that one can obtain within the country and is used, during the last 30 days to apply for an extension of stay. P.S. Is the OP currently in Thailand? His bio has him living in Queensland.

David John Philpott yes, except for the non imm o which is a transitional visa and can be obtained via the local immigration office.

actually I believe even on a 60 tourist visa they could apply for the extension of stay during the last 30 days of that visa.

You would not be applying for a visa - you would apply for an extension of stay based on marriage, and this extension must be renewed each and every year. Additionally you will need to report to your local immigration office every 90 days.

if they are looking for a solution prior to leaving their home country,

they could consider obtaining a non imm o-a multi entry visa. That would give them a year before needing to deal with anything Thai Immigration related other than the 90 day checks. And if they did a border run just prior to the enter before date that is stamped on the visa they could get a second year as well.

Some state that this is a difficult, complex, expensive visa to obtain and I suppose that depends a great deal on the specific Thai Embassy/Consulate you would be dealing with. I have gotten a number of these visas over the past few years and have never found them particularly problematic nor expensive.
