No live experience with this trip but should be possible ofcourse with visa exempt. Only thing I would do is getting the three things they can ask; have 20,000฿ or equivalent in CASH, Address/hotel booking and onward ticket that you leave Thailand within 60 days. In this case a ticket for the boat/ferry to go back 🤷♂️.

Oops. Thought such temp only was in the north like chang rai or so. In the seven years I liver here (20km south of Korat), I only measured 2 times 12°C in the morning.
"Cold" is relative. Depending where you are, it does not go much below 15°C. Sometimes in the morning it does go lower a bit. Y'r question: Islands like e.g. Koh samui etc. are nice, kanchanaburi also for some history of the building of the famous 'bridge over the river Kwai' and maybe, if you want the Thai Isan feeling a bit, first go to Khao Yai national park and then visit also the town Nakhon Ratchasima, with some area and villages around it. If you not like it, just go to another part.
Look what Jan says ! Watch out !! This mistake is made many times ! With this visa you can stay max 60 days with 1 extension it's 90 days. After that you have to border hop (out of Thailand, in and out to another country and come in to Thailand again. Then you get an extra 60 days which you can extend again with 30 days. So if you border hop one of the last days of the validity of y'r visa, you can do the same. So all together, you can almost get 9 months with this visa. But..you have to border hop.
Yep. They told me my health insurance was not deductable. Think has to be Thai.🤷♂️ But I'm happy with the tax over here compared to Netherlands. For as long as the treaty is valid. They want to change it to have source tax, so then no choice so have to pay again in The Netherlands. W'll see.
Right. As long as it's taxed as pension/income you bring in to Thailand and not 'world income' as in many countries. I pay tax already 6 years in Thailand so not have to pay tax in The Netherlands (avoid double tax treaty). So also take care I transfer about 650,000฿. 2nd slice is 5% so about 7,500฿ for a year 😉
The 190,000฿ is one of the deductables. Everyone gets a deductable of 100,000฿, everyone gets a deductable of 60,000฿ (all officialy family members. So not married is only one time 60k฿), above 65 of age a deduktable of 190,000฿ (this you mentioned) and at last the first tax slice of 150,000 is free (0%). So the first 500,000฿ is free as 65-plus not married.
Already buying a non imm. O based on retirement in the States is the best way to go I think. First 90 days a bit of time to get a bank account which is a bit less difficult with a non imm. O visa. Walk in some braches. If you are running out of time and still have no bank account use an agent only to open a Thai bank account. (around 5,000฿ costs is reasonable). I would not do it for the year extension. You have to do this within the first 30 days, because when you want a year extension, the money must be in that bank account for 2 months before the date you ask for the year extension. Depending on the imm. office, you and y'r wife maybe need 2 seperate accounts each 800k฿ instead of 1 of 1.6mil. together. Depending visa for y'r wife is an option you have to investigate because I don't know anything about this. And maybe the non imm. O has another small advantage that you not have to prove to y'r airliner for an 'onwards ticket' should you come in on a one way ticket.
Also, when having y'r bank account, start transfering 65k฿-plus each month (12 times), so with a second year extension, you not need the 'locked' 800k฿ in the bank anymore.
