TLDR : Answer Summary
Many expats are noticing an increase in the scrutiny applied by Thai immigration officials during hotel check-ins. Travelers report that hotel staff are thoroughly checking passports and visa stamps, even asking for photocopies of documents such as the permission to stay stamp. This heightened diligence appears to be a broader trend across Thailand, not limited to major cities like Bangkok.

Had my permission to stay stamp checked and a photocopy of both the ID page (which is normal) and the stamp, and the departure card taken in a hotel in Bangkok this week. All the information written down as well.

They used to just photocopy the ID page and that was it. They’re clearly being asked for more information by immigration.

Thanks for your information Bill and Peter! A couple of weeks ago I and my Thai Mrs checked into a Phuket hotel. I had made the booking online in my wife's name. However, the desk asked for her ID and my passport. Two staff examined every page of my passport then discussed the visa (used) and extension stamps. OK I understand they have to report our checking in, but what would they have done if my stamps had expired?
