A last comment, it is TWO land border. If, due to a mistake or oversight the IO stamp you third time YOU are, technically, illegal in the country.

entering via land with a visa does not count , only 30 days entry and he had none.

time does not reset this, from experience a new passport helps to get new visa issued, but be aware that Immigration at border can see your whole history.
