it’s a good question and best asked to a tax specialist who can explain exactly how the DTA works, if the premise is that you must pay tax somewhere, are exemptions in your home country applicable in Thailand? The other element to this of course is personal allowances, they are much lower in Thailand than UK for example so will tax free remittances to Thailand be taxable here due to the lower tax threshold ?
If you are in Thailand for more than 180 days in calendar year (effective Jan 2024) you are a tax resident, and as such required to file a tax return - Double Tax Treaties exist for many countries incl Australia, US and UK, but this doesn’t mean you can ignore the requirement to file. How this will be enforced remains to be seen, but back taxes and penalties will not be pleasant. Folks on LTR visa are exempt.
IDP very important if you plan to drive here, makes application for local driving license easier, you can use your US driving license for 3 months after arrival after which you are not legal.
Only a matter of time before Cambodia (and others) catch up and tax foreign residents, it’s a step from developing to developed if you pay tax in your home country nothing to worry about. Death and taxes as the saying goes.
that’s a myth - when were you last in a tax office ? I have visited two offices in Phuket , every Jan for last two years, not only are their plenty of staff, they are very helpful and knowledgeable. I do a return because my bank deducts withholding tax on interest I earn for funds I keep here for my wife and I, my refund Cheques are always welcome and they never bounce😊
this kind of disinformation is dangerous, tax residency is now clear, and a tax return is expected every January , and before 30 Mar commencing 2025…….ignorance is no defense, and back taxes and penalties can be onerous……people should be aware of this before they commit to moving here, infinitely sensible advice methinks - what you do is entirely your choice, lots of options available, which I am sure you have considered.
mystery ? effective JAN 2024 anyone who is in the country for more than 180 days is a tax resident and therefore required to submit a tax return before Mar 30 2025 - what does remain a mystery however, is how they will manage residents who’s tax years are not in Sync with Thailand , Uk for example is Apr to Apr so how will they handle the DTA issue , my concern is that I will pay tax next Jan in thailand and only be able to off set against

UK tax - so a year in arrears……..I plan a trip to the tax office in the next month to try to understand how they will deal with this, I suspect the news will not be positive………SIN residency beckons…….
