TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is seeking recommendations for inexpensive Thai insurance that meets the requirements for an O-A retirement visa, as their friend needs coverage until they can apply for a Non-O visa. Suggestions from others include contacting Arawan for assistance, exploring options on Checkdi, and specific providers like AXA and Falcon. Commenters also discuss the challenges of finding affordable options and address concerns regarding visa transitions and border extensions.

Be careful with all those posts that say he only needs a border bounce and re-enter with a visa exempt

Before he can apply inside Thailand for the “change of visa type” from a tourist visa or visa exempt entry to a 90-days Non-Imm-O visa, he must invalidate his current permission of stay

If he is in the first year of his Non-Imm-O/A visa, a border bounce will NOT invalidate his still existing stay permit, because this visa got a multi entry permit included for the duration of the visa validity.

He will just get stamped in for the rest duration of the stay permit, and he won’t be able to apply for a “change of visa type” to a 90 days Non-Imm-O visa

So in order to receive a visa-exempt stamp at the border, he needs to wait until the visa validity of his Non-Imm-O/A visa has expired.

On a Non-OA which is still valid he'd get stamped in for a new 12 months or up to the date his current insurance ends if less than 12 months.

@Graham *****
yes, of course. I wrote "for the rest of his stay permit" because he said he didn't renew his insurance. So he would just get stamped in until the expiry date of his most recent stay permit stamp

Make sure you read the fine print. I was looking into cheap Thai insurance policies for that purpose and thought I'd found a good one l, until my partner noted you are liable for the first 1m baht expenses, although it does meet the Thai Government visa requirements apparently 😆

Have a look on Checkdi (Was Mr Prakan)for all your Thailand insurance requirements

You can compare policies and prices in it from the leading providers

Is he looking at getting a 12 month policy to border bounce while his Non-OA is valid to get a new 12 month entry stamp or to get an in-country extension? There are many insurance policies available to meet OA requirements, try here (was Mr Prakhan) -

None of them will be cheap. Why can't he apply for the non-o inside Thailand

@John *********
he is already on O-A and has to go back home and start again which he is not ready to do right now
Ken *********
@Michael ******
if getting a Type O in Thailand when the O-A expires is appealing, there are IO’s that will issue it, but they may require that he has 800K on deposit at a Thai bank (account solely in his name-no joint accounts) for at least 2 months when he applies. He can check with the IO where he would apply to confirm the specific requirements. Could be easier and cheaper than leaving Thailand to do it.
Rob **********
@Ken ********
you cannot convert a Non OA visa to a Non O visa inside of Thailand, you must leave the country to break that chain.
Steve *******
@Ken ********
The 800k only needs to be seasoned for the 1 year extention of stay not the initial Non imm O visa.
John **********
@Michael ******
but you said he wants to go back home to start on an O, just pointing out he doesn't have to go back home to do that. A border bounce as his OA expires gets him back on a tourist entry and he can then apply for the O inside Thailand
Nongnuch ********
@John *********
he should do a border bounce only after the visa validity has expired. Any border bounce done within the visa validity period will just get him stamped in for the rest of the previously stamped stay permit. This does not allow him to apply for an in-country Non-imm-O

I will suggest that thanks

Or do a Visa run and get the Non-O from a neighbouring country such as Laos

@Graham *****
can he apply for a Non O after a border bounce ? wont he be coming backvin on an exemption rather than a tourist visa ? only Thai embassy in UK can issue him a tourist visa !
Steve *******
@Michael ******
He could get a tourist visa in any neighbouring country no need to return to the UK. He could also apply for a Non Imm O in a neighbouring country or convert a 30 days exemption to Non Imm O in Thailand.
Graham ******
@Michael ******
I posted to get the Non-O from outside Thailand, i got a Non-O from Laos.

Talk to Arawan, she can help.

@Stephan **********
yes but be careful getting cheap , my brother got a cheap policy through poemaininsurance and they wouldn't pay out for a condition for the first 3 months which means you are only getting 9 months cover but pay for 12. You pay for what you get , cheap insurance to get a visa is exactly that cheap and nasty.
Michael *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
He only wants it for visa reasons he is happy to self insure it’s to see him through until he gets his O visa

@Michael ******
And exactly for that Arawan has the right product... ask her for LMG. But of course she can offer other plans as well.
