 being caught is when you're stopped by the police before reaching the airport and end up in a cell because you're already on overstay. He didn't get "caught', he was leaving and ready to catch his flight so no reason for immigration to detain him.

UK don't get visa on arrival. They enter with no visa for 60 day stay on visa exempt.

On line the UK govt info tells you it's 60 days with no visa. You can extend that by 30 days.

 no issues because you weren't caught, didn't get arrested. The fact you got away with it is no reason to tell someone else they will too.
