TLDR : Answer Summary
The post seeks recommendations for reliable notary services in Phuket to notarize a document for submission to the USA. Comments suggest that a Thai notary is acceptable for this purpose, as US notaries cannot notarize documents outside their state. The American embassy's notary services were attempted but not deemed suitable for the required document. One commenter recommends a specific law firm in Phuket for the notarization.

It's for a US govt office, they want it notarised and also a cheque sent in dollars. They assume everyone is in USA.

not sure it will work for your needs but there are online notary services in the US that you can use from Thailand.

I've tried the embassy but don't think they'll notarise this letter. There's no way to ask.

You will need a Thai notary if that is acceptable to whoever is receiving the documents.

US notaries are not permitted to notarize outside the state where they are appointed.

A second option is the American embassy or consulate.

@Brook *******
that's not necessarily true anymore with virtual online notaries.

From the Maryland Notary Manual

“…Where Exercised

Where may a notary public exercise notarial powers?

A notary public may perform notarial acts in any county of the State or in the City of Baltimore, regardless of the place where the notary public was appointed. For instance, a notary public for Somerset County may also act as a notary public in any other county in the State.”

It doesn’t say Maine or Thailand.

How can Florida authorize someone to act in Maryland or California? Lol

@Brook *******
Via video you contact a notary in Maryland where the notary is authorized. You send him the document, you prove your identity, you sign the document in front of the notary, the notary logs the document, affixes their seal and sends it back to you. That's considered a legal notarization in the State of Maryland and the document is accepted as notarized by all the other states and by the federal government.

Yes, things have changed from the old days.

"Can a notary notarize a document from another state?

Yes, most notaries are able to notarize documents even if that document comes from another state. Notaries are geographically limited regarding where they can notarize documents, not necessarily where the documents come from."

"Can a Notary Notarize a Document From Another State?

In order for a notary to be permitted to notarize documents, he or she has to be certified by that specific state. Once a notary receives his or her commission, he or she is permitted to notarize documents in that state. This means that the location where the document is notarized is important, not necessarily where the document is from.

For example, if a notary is commissioned to notarize documents in North Carolina, and he or she is allowed to work as a notary in North Carolina. This means that he or she can accept and notarize documents from other states as long as he or she is still notarizing them in North Carolina. This also means that the notary cannot necessarily notarize documents from North Carolina if he or she is located outside of North Carolina at the time the service is performed. Notaries have geographical boundaries, but they are allowed to notarize documents from other states."

I've looked on their page. Cant see any way to ask them if they notarise letters.

@Lynnette ******
They notarize signatures, not letters. Do you need certified copies? Is that what you are inquiring about?

it is for a replacement of a birth abroad certificate from years ago. They need a letter with all the info, a copy of passport, and want it notarised. Plus US dollars in a bank draft/cheque

@Lynnette ******
I’m willing to bet they want your signature notarized, not the letter. You can’t notarize a letter any more than you can a water Buffalo.

there's no way to ask them. It just asks for the information typed in a letter and to remember to get it notarised.
