TLDR : Answer Summary
If you're entering Thailand with an Australian passport and are eligible for visa exemption, you only need to complete the Thai Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online, which is required for arrivals from May 1st onward. The eVisa form is not necessary unless you intend to apply for a visa. The TDAC replaces the previous paper arrival form and should be filled out within 72 hours before your arrival.

Welcome to the older generation help line. . Lol. If your passport lets you have the 60 day "visa exempt" then all you need to fill in for arrivals from May 1st is the Thai Digital Arrival Card on line ( TDAC ). If you get really flummoxed then you can get help at the airport and do it on one of their little gadgets.
lol. I'm an oldie too. TDAC I'll be doing next Monday. QR codes never seem to work and I still print everything off. Lol. But that's in case of a lost or broken phone. . I play safe!

Arrivals from 1-May you complete the TDAC arrival card within 72 hours prior to arrival, nothing else has changed.

If you need or want a visa, then you apply for a visa through the e-visa portal. If you are fine with just entering visa exempt without a visa, and getting 60 days (or 30 if it switches back) then you don't have to do anything with e-visa.
The digital arrival card is not for customs. Customs is who checks your bags to see what you are bringing into Thailand. The arrival card is for immigration and replaces the old paper form they used to hand out on the plane.
