only 20 years here, it's still the law of the land however they apply it. I know enough to have got by

I did mine at CW. I had the letter from the British Embassy to do the monthly funds. Sadly this letter is no longer available from the embassy

it can be a pain but you will get it sorted. Without hiring an agent maybe get a consultation from a local agent for some lunch money. They could maybe grease the wheels

They are giving you incorrect information. I did mine in country after arriving on visa exempt. I got a non O and a couple of months later I got the annual extension
