I actually did eventually get my refund thanks to the hotel advocating for me, but it was ridiculous that I needed to fight so hard.

that’s not always true. Sometimes the hotel’s contract with the booking site actually requires that theirs be the lowest price.

Agreed. In Jan. 2020, I was scheduled to go to Phuket and could not due to a medical emergency. The hotel was very understanding and very willing to cancel my reservation. However, at the time, everyone was panicking due to the start of the pandemic. Hotels.com was not as accommodating as the hotel, despite my documentation that I was not permitted to travel. It was not a pleasant experience while ill.

Fees for visa applications, in every country, are fees to pay for the application process.

one can be a nomad within one country for a year or more, especially given the current climate where international travel is more challenging. Of course, Thailand is not the easiest place to be nomadic.

This is one of the reasons why men import women from countries where they know the women will then have no recourse. I'm not saying that is what happened here. I don't know either of the parties involved, but it definitely does happen.
