How can I get Emgality or similar refrigerated medications in Thailand?

Hi Folks,

I have a very specific question falling under "Everything else". I am planning to move to Thailand (I hope) by the end of the year. However, I have a challenge. I am on a medication that does not seem to be sold in Thailand and needs refrigeration. So, I have a two-part question:

1) Is there anyone taking Emgality and, if so, how are you getting it?

2) For those who have refrigerated medications that are not available in Thailand, how do you bring them in?

Even if I can get the medication elsewhere (the only semi-local option seems to be Singapore and even that will be challenging), I'm concerned about the transport. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on how to obtain and transport Emgality, a refrigerated medication that is not readily available in Thailand. Key suggestions from the community include contacting Bangkok drugstores for help, searching for the medication using its generic name, and consulting with reputable hospitals like Bangkok Hospital or individual doctors familiar with the medication. Several users recommend building a relationship with a local doctor for prescriptions and highlight that medications can often be special ordered through pharmacies if a prescription is available.

Similar to Dr Morgan and Health Care Medical Clinic in Chiang Mai but for Bangkok is Dr Donna Robinson, a British doctor, GP and qualified in Thailand. She also has close relationships with Bumungrad Hospital, indeed worked or works there but is very busy running her own health centre in Bangkok - Thonglor area. It is called MedConsult Clinic. https://www.medconsultasia.com/ Be sure to use only this e-mail address

I have a very good Thai Doctor. Your best bet is to contact the Bangkok Hospital chain. Best place to get Professional Medical advice.

Doctor Morgan in Chiang Mai has a lot of Expat Clients. Contact her office through her Facebook Page. She is very busy so you will not get detailed info, but if you just inquire about your medication availability I’m sure her staff will reply.

thank you. I will try that. That’s not the hospital that gave me a bit of a run around before, so maybe I’ll have more success. I’m also going to get LinkedIn premium, so I can try to contact the two Lilly Thailand folks I found there.

I had hoped I might find someone taking emgality on the group, who might be able to refer me to their doctor. However, people have been tremendously helpful.

Thanks again.

someone (was it you?) posted part of this label before and that’s what got me searching further for the Thai office for Lilly. I still don’t know how to get the medication though. That initial comment did help at least give me a place to start though. I responded to it. I don’t know why it’s now gone.

Doctors and Pharmacies are very good here. Excellent healthcare in Thailand.

So, can you tell me...when the pharmacy said you needed a prescription for your medication, did it need to be a Thai doctor? If not, that would help me with one step until I can find a Thai doctor who can help me for later refills.

I have had mixed experiences. With that said, it’s certainly better than the States 🙂. The timeframe is the scary factor (I’ve been down this road before and had to take an emergency flight (which also almost made an emergency landing because of me) back to the U.S.

. Things snowballed from there and I got stuck here. I am simply trying to get my ducks in a row to prevent a recurrence. Last time, I had more time to get things lined up. This time, it will be less than a month in-country to do so. I don’t want to be chasing my tail again. Arriving without things in place does not make sense. It’s too important.

If you go to a Pharmacy if it is available in Thailand they will order it for you. You may need a Doctors subscription

I am on a Blood Thinner that is available in Thailand but not carried by Pharmacies. I would have to go to Ram Hospital to get it. I mentioned this to Pharmacist and she said no problem I will special order it for you. I had a Doctors subscription. She had it within 24 hours.

which means I need a doctor familiar with emgality & there’s the rub. I need a pharmacy that will deal with a medication needing refrigerated shipping & storage AND I need a doctor willing to prescribe. I’m assuming I need an in-country prescription. Am I wrong? I’ve never had prescriptions filled in Thailand and I cannot miss a single, monthly dose.

Very few of the brand name medicines in the US are sold in Thailand. If you're searching for availability, you need to search for the generic name of the drug, as
@Stuart ********
suggests.

You can contact bangkokdrugstore.com and they will tell you and costs associated.

Your meds or an equivalent will most likely be found and usually much cheaper.

Sorry I don’t know the specific answer to your question, but a Google search of “Galcanezumab Thailand” seemed to return a number of results. Eli Lilly asia seems to be mentioned a number of times.

Yes. Lilly is the company that makes Emgality. I do not believe there is a generic version available. I am very pleased to learn there is a Lilly office in Thailand as that is contrary to what their own company told me, lol. Since reading your and Chris' message, I've looked up some contacts on LinkedIn and will see if I make any progress there. Thanks.
