Can I use Wise to pay my landlord in Thailand while I'm abroad?

Hi Folks,

Ok this falls under "everything else". I'm still trying to get everything setup after I recently "moved to" Thailand. The logistics are still being worked out, but I now have an apartment that I'm just moving into but I'm leaving the country for a few weeks.

My first (or technically second) month's rent will be due when I'm out of the country, but I don't think I'll have my bank account setup in time. Last summer, Wise did whatever magic it needed to do to determine that I'm real and apparently not a money launderer or whatever they do to approve someone to use their services. However, I've never gotten past that point.

Here's my question...please be kind because this Wise system feels like a black box to me. Can I transfer money into Wise, have it converted to baht then transfered directly into my landlord's bank account from there, even if the landlord knows nothing about Wise? I'm hoping this is a solution to my challenge.

Thanks so much.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is relocating to Thailand and is concerned about paying their landlord's rent while traveling abroad. They inquire if they can use Wise to transfer funds to their landlord's Thai bank account without the landlord needing to know about Wise. Community responses confirm that using Wise for this purpose is possible, provided they have the landlord's bank details. Recommendations include making a small test transfer and communicating with the landlord about any delayed payment due to the upcoming travel.

Drop Wise, they think we all are crooks - maybe because they themselves are!
Justin ********
It appears wise charges a fee to convert and another fee to send. Just send once it will convert and send avoiding double fees
Paul **********
why not just give him a couple of months rent in advance, that way you can relax until your return.

Yes

Yes. All that magic is easy

Why don't you just pay in advance

I've already addressed that.

why can't you pay ahead? That way you don't need to worry

I've addressed that above. I didn't ask for alternatives. I asked a question about Wise.
Terary **********
yes you can!

I would recommend transferring yourself some money just to gain experience. Also, if there is time, I would pay this months rent via wise so your Landlord knows what to expect.

Wise is a great service and use them frequently. However, they can be quarky. Most my transfers have been taking 24 hours. Before it was with in minutes. On occasion it can take a week.

I have had same issue. I have noticed it all depends on what you say you are transferring it for. Certain things take longer. So now I just say it's for goods or travel 😂

I hope to do a retirement visa based off of income in a 9 months. So I have been transferring using the reason "long term living in Thailand", which probably adds time.

I'm signing my lease tonight, so that would be "no" on the "if there is time" :-). I will do, as another suggested, and transfer a small sum to the landlord earlier to be sure the transaction goes through prior to the due date. Thank you for your response.

You can also still do it the old-fashioned way. Set up the third party payment, then transfer money to Wise. When your covering payment has reached them they send it on (in Thai Baht) to the recipient.

that sure didn’t make it sound more simple

Wise just send a message to pay them giving their account details for BACS payment. It arrives and they send on. You don't have to have the new-style account unless they are forcing people toward that now. I use Wise regularly but to be honest keep forgetting to change to the new account style. One day I'll remember if only to get the card. Talking of cards, that is another way of paying Wise after having set up your transaction.

Thank you all! Very helpful. It works the way I had hoped. I guess I wasn’t quite as lost as I had thought :-).

Just pay a months rent in advance before you leave. There is nothing wrong with that, and it is much easier to do.

I did consider that, but something someone said on another group regarding a post made me a bit tentative. I prefer not to get into details.

Thais like to be paid on time otherwise they struggle to track payments. Let wise do the magic

did you actually talk to your landlord, and explain the situation, and ask them what to do? That will actually give you the best alternative, straight from the horse's mouth so to speak. The landlord is not your enemy.

I never said they were.🤦 I have never met the landlord. I will meet her tonight and I've already said that I plan to talk to her about the situation. I just want to have as much information as possible available to me so I can present options. I don't want her to think I'm trying to avoid timely payment. Why is simply answering a question without passing judgement or making assumptions so difficult for people?
Kool *******
@Ruth ******
because you are trying to make it difficult. You ask for options before you have even talked to your landlord. The landlord has all the options you need. Whatever they say is what it is, not options strangers give you. If you don't have the cash to pay in advance then be honest about it. And, don't believe all the horror stories people try to pass on, because they heard something. You're only going away for a couple of weeks. At the most there could be a late payment fee. They aren't going to evict you, or steal all your deposit because you were a week late...lolol

neither is my concern, so let’s just stick to the question. I’m going to need this information moving forward anyway until I can get a bank account, so it’s not difficult to simply ask and get an answer. I’m done responding to you now.

@Ruth ******
please let us know what your landlord says when you talk to them

Sadly, I transfer money into my girlfriend's Thai bank account every month. You just need your landlord's account number.

Yes

For a few weeks ? And you pay monthly direct to your landlord, and not via an estate agent ? .. you can just set it up to transfer to either , or as it’s only a few weeks maybe just ask them that you’re be a couple weeks late .. as long as you pay within the month I’m sure it won’t be an issue ?
Ruth *******

@Martin ********
I’m hoping that to be true. It’s just that it will be the first payment & I don’t want to start things off on the wrong foot. We meet to sign the lease tomorrow. I’m hoping that when we meet in person, I can explain the situation & they will understand. I just want to have the information in my mind to make the best effort anyway. Thanks.
Martin *********
@Ruth ******
I’m sure it will be fine , most are glad to have tenants anyway , so it would really be in their interest to be too rigid , especially under your explained circumstances ..

Nothing wrong with paying 2 weeks in advance....

I'd be paying a month in advance and there can be, as I read in a post elsewhere. I have my reasons for not wanting to go in that direction, so let's just stick with my question, please.

there can be What???
Chris *******
All you need to do is setup your landlord as a recipient and just transfer to them.

great! That was my hope. I need to spend some time tomorrow learning more about it.

Yes is the simple answer, You would transfer the amount from your bank account into your wise account and then, once the amount is shown in your wise account you can send it to someone else’s bank account (they do not have to have wise)
Gareth ********
Yes. Wise is basically just another bank account. You will need the payees full name, bank details and possibly for setting up the payment their home address.

It’s quite straightforward on their app. If you’re uncertain just send them a small test payment first.

great idea. I usually do that for payments at home. I like that idea for testing Wise.

Yes you can if you have his account details
