If you are not married to the mother and have not been to the family court to be recognised as the legal father you cannot get the 12 month extension of stay based on Visiting Thai Family as you do not qualify.
Your first extension must, therefore, be for the reason that the Visa was issued i.e. marriage then the reason for the second extension 12 months later can be changed to retirement (if you meet the financial requirements etc.)
You cannot change a Non-O Visa as Brandon stated but you can change the reason for a 12 month extension when next extending so, are you on a Non-O 90 day Visa or a 12 month Extension of Stay?
When your annual extension is approved you can draw from the 400k for living expenses for the period leading up to 2 months before you apply for your next extension when you will need to deposit again back to the 400k. It's not dead money for life. 😉
