What embassy in Bangkok? There's no embassy in Bangkok that has anything to do with non-O visas. Those are visas for Thailand and there's no Thai embassy inside of Thailand.

And embassies have nothing to do with extensions. Those are done by immigration.

that's because ED visas are the most abused visa. If it expired after a year it's obvious abuse because only university EDs can be a year long so an agent would have gotten it. You're lucky they let him in at all

well it doesn't matter what That wants. It's immigration that decides if you're allowed in. The definition of a tourist is what the immigration officer you're standing in front of decides it is. That's how everything in Thailand works. Full discretion given to the person there. Each bank branch manager of a bank makes decisions about that bank branch. Each immigration office sets their own policies. Each Thai embassy sets their own policies. That's just how Thailand works and it's not likely to change. At least the ETA system would have added some type of approval, but whether that ever happens is up in the air. Until then, 40 million arrivals in a year and growing, I don't think they're too worried about it.

Non-immigrant visas have no requirement for onward travel. It's only tourists that require that.

They will put you in the holding room until YOU buy a ticket to wherever they say, or until you can scrape up the money. Many people have reported about it.

The rules do not state a limit, but that doesn't mean unlimited. Visa exempt is for TOURISTS. If you are spending 180+ days in Thailand, you're clearly not a tourist. Therefore it is abuse.

It's onward travel, not return travel. They don't care where the ticket is to as long as it's out of Thailand

You don't get to decide where you are going. They decide where you are going. They can give you the choice if they want, but they can also make you fly back to your passport country.

Yes. The only person who decides if you are allowed in is the individual immigration officer you are standing in front of. Entry is at their discretion, same as passport control for every country.
