Up until the outbreak, tourism was estimated to be responsible for 12-20% of Thailand’s GDP, depending on which source you looked at.

Now, the pervasive narrative is that the total economy is expected to tank, primarily because of the loss of tourism.

Suddenly tourism is responsible for the majority of the Thai economy? Enough to bring the whole country to its knees?

This is the first time I’ve heard of foreigners with marriage/family ties in Thailand being part of the first group to be allowed to return.

I’ve been reading some pretty sad stories lately of particularly husbands and fathers stuck in this dismal and distributing situation. Most were traveling for business or other legitimate purposes when the bamboo curtain came down.
