TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the news regarding Thailand's new entry requirements for foreigners as the country gradually reopens its borders. Commenters express concerns about the hefty costs involved, such as medical certificates and quarantine measures, which may deter tourism and affect long-term residents. Many are uncertain about future job prospects, visa runs, and the implications of tightened immigration policies, highlighting a general sentiment of disappointment and apprehension regarding travel to Thailand.

Up until the outbreak, tourism was estimated to be responsible for 12-20% of Thailand’s GDP, depending on which source you looked at.

Now, the pervasive narrative is that the total economy is expected to tank, primarily because of the loss of tourism.

Suddenly tourism is responsible for the majority of the Thai economy? Enough to bring the whole country to its knees?

Statisticians, doomsayers, soothsayers: which is it? 😳

- the Shutdown / Lockdown has shuttered hundreds of thousands of shops and even larger businesses. Practically no car sales, Cars & trucks by the hundreds of thousands being repossessed, one million direct tourism jobs gone. Another million indirect tourism jobs gone. Factory jobs of all nature furloughed. How many millions of jobs are gone because of the Lockdown? Ten million jobs - who knows... Food handout queues every morning in every city and town... The epidemic was a much smaller problem than the unwise extended Lockdown.

Next will be a different story. Tryin to be one minute news superstars hhh next week will change again. Show they are workin hard. But we all know on the ground the truth is different than the news. Once the airports open the hunger for cash will trump all and things will change for the easier

This post is going to be a never ending one because the Thai Officials will keep changing their minds as much as most people change their underwear.

So That is that then. Pretty much shut the borders and keep em closed until a vaccine comes along and the world is vaccinated. Good luck Thailand you are going to need it

This suggests that a land border crossing through Cambodia would be possible in June provided the other requirements (insurance, embassy cert, recent test, quarantine, etc.) are met. Can anyone confirm?

"The fifth group are foreigners either with work permits or who are permitted to take up work permits." So, work permit holders and any visa that allows a work permit, such as Thai spouse?

"This may be an option for those that do but who cannot access Thailand because of the passenger flight ban but meet the other criteria under the emergency decree."
Joe ***********
@David ***************
- As of current status today - one cannot exit and return to Thailand (no matter if all requirements to Reenter are met (the Thai Border is closed).

So until it is changed going to Cambodia is fine but coming back is not allowed.

This is what I expected to see from Thailand and the reason I will not return even though I currently have a Thai wife and son. Very cruel and with very little empathy toward anyone in my position. 😞

No migrant workers and Asean will be treated differently. The whole thing is absurd.
Khun ******
What about Birmees workforce? They have to fulfil the same requirements. 100.000$ Covid Insurance and 14 day quarantaine for every worker when crossing border... I don't think the soup will be eaten as hot as it's served..
Bobby ********
Is this real or just a Fake News?
Tod *********
There are NO new entry requirements in place since the ones that got canceled when the closed the country.

If I were you think about other places. Thailand has become the land against westerners.
Tony **********
They r obviuosly not so concerned about tourists coming back
Wilmont ******
@Tony *********
Their more concerned with upsetting the Chinese Government then their own people’s health and welfare.
Jonathan ************
Again they neglect people with families and young kids. They don't seem to realise that kids need there mothers or fathers.
Bim *******
@Jonathan ***********
they don't care about over 20,000 of there own citizens dying on the roads every year. If they did with the same over reaction to this they would have banned motor vehicles years ago.
Tommy ********
I wonder what this means for visa runs. Quarantine every time? Possibility of not getting back in?
Jeff *******
they were even starting to discourage issuance of back to back non-Bs at consulates in the region. *before* the pandemic.

they want people to go to Immigration in Thailand to extend their non-B visa.
Matt *******
@Tommy *******
Visa runs will be impossible now, they were already starting to crack down on the whole back-to-back tourist visas even before coronavirus but now this just makes it even more difficult
Wilmont ******
@Tommy *******
That’s what’s not totally understood because this is not explained thoroughly. I see this as the Thai Governments ATM
Paul ********
Yeah, guess I won't be going to Thailand any time soon. We were supposed to be there now visiting the in-laws. 😒
Steven *******
@Paul *******
same😭😭😭😭
Kevin *********
Feel sorry for the normal Thai people they have no chance
Bim *******
If it was Ebola I would totally understand but this over reaction will cost the country dear. In terms of tourism it's a death knell. In terms of long stay foriegners not a chance. It's like they are purposely trying to ruin there own economy over a virus we now know much more about and has been blown totally out of proportion. Crazy times.
Darren *******
@Bim ******
long term residents, by and large, are happy to pay for the quarantine if it means they can return to Thailand where their family, kids, work, home etc is.

I’m foreseeing a major change in the economy of Far East

My mate studies world economy and this thing with China getting the upper hand on the global currency by launching their own bitcoin before USA could lead the USD to crash and the big switch turns and the boost over in the Far East is certainly what we think is being prepared for ..

My last application for visit visa required three months of bank statements showing £1500 pound per month coming in

I’m shy of that but managed to be approved somehow by bank statement confusions since I have changes in earnings as an artist

Thing is people I know who work pretty much full time after tax don’t have that £1500pcm so obviously would prevent large numbers of applications

I just did a lot of communicating with thai embassy others may not think to do that 😉
Wilmont ******
@Bim ******
You have to remember these officials have an Island Mentality.
Andrew *******
I mean this has been news for like 4-6 weeks now atleast.
Wilmont ******
@Andrew ******
Maybe but it has never been explained this way before. Before everything was going to, maybe, to waiting for next meeting.

I’ve been telling my mates that the western world is fucked and Thailand is closing down its borders by tightening entry requirements and this is that nail in the coffin .. now I have to plan again for my entry and hopes for teaching over there . I have offers of volunteering for local rescue teams as an English speaking volounteer

I wonder if this could be used to apply

My father was wrongfully recorded as a covid death .. long story short I’m challenging this three healthcare professionals prepared to stand up in court with evidence he didn’t have covid

I got his possessions three or four days after his passing

The one healthcare professional who had close contact with my father said both her and me should have covid

So I guess if covid is a thing then I’m immune or he never had covid in the first place ..

So it’s a tough one and I’m hoping that someone in the group may have some advice who’s over there and more clues up

This news is depressing to say the least my family is in Thailand and my life is in Thailand
Kim ********
What's his Nick Name NIKE?????
Wilmont ******
They are truly ensuring that people will not be coming to Thailand because of all the expense just to enter the country and will choose alternative countries to vacation.

I am supposed to be starting a job in July. Anyone know what I should do given the current circumstances?
Michael ********
Yes i went to Embassy in Singapore and they are not processing visa for foriegners.
Darren *******
@Adam ***************
tourists won't be entering in July. Regarding your job, speak to your employer as it sounds like you'll have to go into quarantine when you're allowed to enter.
Garrett ***********
Well that's depressing.
Adam ****************
These conditions are to be there even when flights resume on July? Medical certificate etc? Tourism will be hit very badly I guess.
