This is Thailand and you should never ever let your visa expire if you stay here long term. Especially now when it's difficult to deal with the embassies. You never know if you can get back in.

Get an extension before it expires. Then apply for the re-entry stamp. It's better than dealing with the embassy later. Even more requirements.

Get a re entry stamp and leave. Then you can come back and apply for another extension. Too much hassle now for visas at the embassy.

I would do it a week before your visa expires. Make sure all the documents are prepared and ready . I did mine last month and I got my under consideration on the same day as applying.

Any multiple entry visa is essentially useless as of now. The government have also not made any solutions for those that use multiple entry visas.
