What documents do I need to transfer my Thai visa from an old Australian passport to a new one?

Old Australian passport expires this month so I got it renewed and new one arrived last week. Today I got a call from my husbands company immigration person saying that in order to transfer my visa/extension of stay from my old passport to my new one they need the piece of paper that came with my new passport in order to prove that I got the passport renewed?? I wasn’t told about it so I didn’t keep the paper- all it said was pretty much along the lines of ‘ here is your new passport, keep it safe.’

Has anyone else been asked for this when transferring visa/extension of stays into new passport? Or have you just needed to show both passports?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user needs to transfer their Thai visa from an old Australian passport to a newly issued one but was informed they require a specific document from their embassy to prove the new passport has replaced the old one. Various users suggest obtaining a stamp from the old passport indicating the new passport issued, as this is often accepted by Thai immigration authorities instead of a letter. They advise contacting the embassy promptly, as procedures may vary, and to be prepared with both the old and the new passport during the process.

AFAIK; everyone who gets a new passport inside the country gets a paper from their embassy OR the company that contracts with your embassy to provide passports for your country.

It should have been addressed to the immigration office and said you switched passports inside the country and would immigrations transfer the stamps.

I have seen immigrations hard line people making them go to the police station getting a report stating you lost the paper OR send you to your consulate to get a new paper before they'll transfer stamps.

I sympathize with your plight but alas it is what it is..

Don't know the Australian protocols but my American passport has a note printed on the last page saying this passport replaces passport #xxxxxxxxxx. Does Australia have a similar note?

yes we do- it’s a stamp. I think in my case they didn’t realise this. So should be an easy fix on Monday.

I wonder which passports require the letter from the embassy though?

Thanks everyone. I do have that stamp in my old passport. I will bring that point up on Monday.

I imagine you need to write the new passport number in the space provided.

Australian Embassy would have placed a stamp in your old passport - next to bio page - that says you have been issued a new passport and space on a line for you to enter new passport number. That is proof and arrangement between Australia and Thaj Immigration. They dont provide a letter.

If it's Australian passport, there is a Stamp placed in the old passport to say that a new one has been issued. You may have to fill in the new passport number. The Australian embassy don't give you a letter

Agree, I had to go to my embassy when I renewed mine.

Get a letter from your embassy that says you got a new passport. Or, if your embassy is like the Australian embassy that does not issue them, you need a slip or stamp in the passport that details that the passport was cancelled and replaced by xxxxx passport.

it is the Australain embassy. I do have that stamp in the old passport so that’s kinda why I am confused.

You don't get any slip or a letter from the Australian embassy. Only the stamp. I just told immigration that my embassy does not issue any letters, showed them an email from the embassy that stated this.

They put this in my old passport.

that’s what is in mine. Perhaps it’s just a miscommunication. I will let them know on Monday.

Yes. I can 100% confirm that you will NOT get anything else from the Oz Embassy. Immigration get confused because other embassies DO provide such a letter when a passport is renewed. ie US embassy and others.

Contact your embassy ASAP. I had the same problem. Luckily I had an embassy close by.

You need the document from your Embassy that your new passport is genuine and a replacement of the old passport to transfer the Extension of Stay.
