I use Bank of America. I do direct bank transfers to Kassikorn. They used to charge me a transfer fee but several years ago they stopped doing this for me for international transfers. They still charge me $30 for each US bank to US bank transfers. I don’t know why. I’m sure they get their fee somewhere in the currency conversion.
Transfers happen same day. No limits on transfer amounts.
I use a security key for verification so no phone required for transfers. However, I did give them a US phone number and US address when I set up the account so I maintain a US phone number. I’m not sure what would happen if I tried using my Thai phone and/or address.
I tried and failed to set up a Wise account last year to compare the two services.
I’ve been very happy with BofA. I had Wells Fargo when I first came to Thailand and they were awful with international transfers at the time.
You are at the mercy of the exchange rates. Similar to inflation you just have to adjust your spending accordingly. You can look up the history of your exchange rate. Be sure you can afford to live here. Keep some savings available to fund you when the rates are less favorable.
I do wire transfers from my US bank when I need money. My US bank doesn’t charge me international transfer fees. If your bank does charge fees then you can wire larger amounts less frequently.
Terry Morgan You don’t renew visas at Immigration inside Thailand. You extend your OA or O one year at a time. The one year extension for OA and O is exactly the same except for the insurance requirement for the OA. What is the mistake with your OA?
I can’t remember the last time I used my US number before last month’s trip. I hadn’t left Thailand since 2019 and I don’t need my phone to do my banking.
I turn on my AT&T number 1-2x per year. I returned to the US last month and had no problem using my AT&T number. I’m not saying some people may not have a problem but I didn’t. I got my SIM card six years ago.
Let’s emphasize though that they almost never ask for this. If you are a normal visitor then you have little to worry about.
I will say though that I brought the 20,000 baht for the first time when I traveled last month. I had switched to a new visa and I didn’t know if I would encounter any problems when I returned. I did not have any problem returning and I was not asked about the money.
When you get a 1 year extension you sign a document that says you understand the terms of the financial requirements. I think you have to honor those requirements throughout the year. That would mean not going below 400k the remainder of the year. If they see you didn't abide by the requirements it may complicate whatever you plan to do the subsequent year. Or maybe not. Play it safe or take a risk?
James Lasenby-Griffiths That is the earliest you apply for your next extension. In most offices it it 30 days but in Bangkok it is 45 days. I recommend going as early as possible.
