I was under the impression that Tricare is only good in CONUS. How can it be used in Thailand? This could save me a load of money because I mostly use Bangkok hospital in Udon Thani.
Hi, I am in Thailand on a non O visa and have to open a bank account to make my 800 000 baht deposit - which requires having a six month lease for accommodation. I am finding it quite difficult to find something suitable in Udon Thani as most condos specify a one year lease. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.
It's taken longer than planned but I gave it a month to be on safe side ,but I got approval yesterday for my DTV .
I mention it because I picked a cookery course in Udon Thani.
I have a lady friend near there .It's 5 hours Saturday and Sunday which suits me as well.Hope this helps somebody else who is looking at courses away from the bigger cities in future 🙏
Hey folks, here's the lowdown on my successful DTV extension and how it worked.
Chapter 1 - Preparation
Bureaucrats love papers, right? As such, I painstakingly prepared a portfolio of 48 pages. It included:
-A table of contents
-An explanation of my work/income sources as a freelancer and my situation working from Thailand
-Screenshots of recent payouts and invoices
-My Upwork profile page for content writing + teaching profile from two platforms I teach on
-A freelance contract with one of the companies I work with
-3 months of bank statements
-An invitation letter from my accommodation
-My accommodation owner's ID copy and house book copy
-Published writing samples (as more evidence of freelance work)
After carefully preparing the portfolio, making the long journey from the countryside to the city, printing the portfolio, and running across the city to the immigration, I marched in, sure that imminent victory was mine.
"Passport please", requested the smiling officer at the info desk.
Guess who was so caught up in preparing the portfolio that she didn't even think of bringing her passport? Yep, that's right.
So, two days later, I came back, portfolio AND passport in hand. First at the info desk, the staff called over some other colleagues to talk with, probably because DTV is not a common visa class around here.
One of the staff members asked me why I don't just leave the country and then come back and get another 180 days. I briefly explained why it's much more convenient for me to extend. That seemed to satisfy her.
The staff at the info desk looked through my portfolio, but they were only interested in:
-The bank statements
-The accommodation docs (invitation letter, owner ID, house book)
After awhile, they sent me to sit down and wait. I waited for around an hour or an hour and a half, then they called me up to a.) sign my name on every single page of my portfolio, plus a few other documents (wow, I haven't practiced my signature this much since about first grade) and b.) pay. And that was that! They granted me a 6-month extension of DTV.
I'm sharing this here because lots of people who try to extend in Chiang Mai are denied, and I'm not sure how the situation is in other cities. So, if your city makes it more difficult, maybe Udon Thani can be an alternative for those who don't fancy a trip to Laos.
Thinking of doing my 6 month dtv border run in laos, any advice on most efficient way to pop out and in? I was thinking a flight from bkk to Udon Thani and making our way to the Thao Laos friendship bridge.
Simple process of extending my license in Udon Thani myself. Agent's are asking silly money for what is essentially a couple of hours work.
Asked my guesthouse/hotel for copy of TM30. Went to the new immigration by the lake.office. Had 2 months remaining but old passport has been lost.
Very friendly people at the office. Printed out every single entry in and out of Thailand and put the info with an official letter linking my new passport. I didn't ask for this to be done along with the 2 letters for the licence.
Driving licence office. Limited English with my limited Thai. Showed a copy of the QR code for online learning. Loads of photocopies of everything, old passport, DTV etc. After about 45 minutes 5 year's provided. Can't remember the exact amount but I think ฿1200.
Initially I went to the wrong office but they checked everything and made more photocopies and sectioned everything off. Ignore agent's wanting silly money saying it's difficult. Overall I came across very friendly people during the simple process.
My friend got his first 2 year exchanging UK licence at the same time. No IDP required.
Hiya everyone I've been on holiday twice already this year staying with my girlfriend at her home in udon Thani I've booked and paid for a flight back over Christmas 16th dec till 5th of January and didn't realise i would need a visa and now no time to get one I'm from the UK and have a UK passport over the last few years I've been 6 times with no problems any advice or do I cancel and lose my money for the flight
