TLDR : Answer Summary
A 66-year-old American looking to live permanently in Thailand seeks advice on health insurance. Key points include the importance of purchasing insurance early, particularly as one ages, due to rising costs and potential exclusions for pre-existing conditions. Recommendations highlight contacting insurance broker Robert Jackson or companies like Pacific Cross. Some expats suggest using government hospitals for lower costs and mention the insurance requirements for various visa types, such as the OA and O visas, with preference for the O visa to avoid stringent insurance requirements.

Living here for 20 years, had to figure out insurance need when aging. 8 years ago found a great broker who guided me through my needs, as I aged, advised me and gave me best options. He was there for me when in hospital and made sure 100% paid by my insurance. PM me and will put him in touch with you.
hi.. pls send me your email in PM & send to him today

I've been in Thailand for 13 years and am now 73. I got private insurance a couple years ago when I needed it to get back after the pandemic. My advice is buy the best you can find NOW because it gets harder once you are in your 70's. Oh, and definitely work with someone like Robert Jackson who knows the ins and outs.

I bought Thai insurance, Pacific Cross, when I was 62. If you buy health insurance late in life the prices will be higher and there will be exclusions of existing conditions. I bought a 10 million baht policy with a 40,000 baht deductible. Essentially, I am self insuring for the everyday stuff and I have insurance in case something truly terrible (short of death) happens. A large deductible will lower the cost. Also, be aware that many insurance policies will not cover you well in the US so you may have to buy travel insurance if you return to the US for a visit. The OA visa requires insurance. I recommend not getting an OA but pursuing an O visa that doesn't have the insurance requirement tied to the visa and extensions.
My original agent is no longer there. I originally just contacted PC directly. I have a name of someone who handles my renewal but Iโve never talked to her directly. Best to contact them directly or through a broker. Sorry ๐
I don't have any insurance, I use the government hospitals you still have to pay for the service but it's a lot cheaper than private insurance company's
