What are the requirements and surprising details for extending a Non-Immigrant O-A Visa in Thailand?

I got my first 1 year extension today. I did my internet research and I follow this FB group closely but there were still a few things that surprised me. I arrived in Thailand last year on a Non-Immigrant O-A visa based on being over 50 years old. I have a multiple entry permit. I went to Bangkok Immigration. Here is what surprises and/or mistakes I made in my preparation:

1. They only needed 1 copy of my documents. I thought I needed 3 copies but no.

2. They wanted a specific form letter from Kasikorn about my bank balance. Just having a print out of the last few months of my account was not enough though they kept that too.

3. They wanted a copy of my passbook with a recent transaction so I withdrew 1000 baht while at immigration.

4. They did want the personal statement that is one of the 3 forms Tod Daniels has posted on this site.

5. They wanted a copy of the stamp for my last multiple entry permit in my passport.

6. I did need a hand drawing of the location of my residence which I, luckily, did the night before.

Observations: The officer I met was very thorough and efficient. Once my documents were in process I could go to the bank or copy shop and return without waiting in line to see the officer again. I really have no complaints about the staff. They were working hard and were very professional. The officer spoke no english but I clearly understood what she wanted me to do.

I did not need to hire anyone to help me. It was Friday. The lines were long. I arrived before 8am and left at 14:20. No surprises there.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user shares their experience acquiring a 1-year extension on a Non-Immigrant O-A visa in Thailand, highlighting unexpected requirements such as needing only one copy of documents instead of three, the necessity of a specific bank balance letter, and a hand-drawn map of their residence. They described the immigration officer as thorough and noted they didn't require external assistance, despite the supportive nature of Thai bureaucratic processes.

Also, regarding the map, donโ€™t worry about your drawing skills. It was a quick sketch. Nothing impressive about it. Just donโ€™t try to print a Google map. Just guessing but I think they want a personal touch.

The trace-over is an EXCELLENT idea

I just drew a cross intersection and labeled it Asok & Sukhumvit and then a single line with Soi 12 on it :O It was the worst map ever ;)

I thought of that too but in the end decided on a childlike drawing.

I print a Google map and trace over it...

Getting there two hours early or waiting 2 hours in immigration seems to me to be the same difference. What I donโ€™t want is to not finish my business before the end of the day. That makes an afternoon arrival risky. Though an afternoon arrival Tue-Thu for a 90 day checkin is safe.

understand yes it can help a different day. But try to get there early before they give out the queue number you would of spent less time at immigration

Two things about that. The first officer checked my documents quickly but then they got passed to the next person and it took about 45 minutes to finish the process and give me my passport. Second, people were getting there early, like 6am, and waiting for the 8:30 opening time. I got there at 8am and had to wait until 11:30 before my number was called. The document process was OK but I still spent 6 hours there. It was my choice to go on a Friday. Iโ€™m thinking Tuesday-Thursday might be a better choice but who knows?

Always good to have positive comments...

Glad that it worked out for you.

Yep, IF you're using banked money they always want you to update the bank book and show the balance on the day you're applying for the extension. To show the money is still IN the account ;)

That hand drawn map thing is fairly new,

Again glad it worked out.

Don't forget IF you are going to leave the country you need a re-entry permit :)

It is very convenient that there are full service bank branches downstairs.
