Good Work -- you got the process right but the terminology a bit wrong... Just for future reference... the 90 Day Non Immigrant O Visa for starting is correct... The one year you got is technically called an Extension for being over age 50 (Retirement) It is an Extension of a Visa - Extended Permission to stay. The last part is the Multi-Entry... You got what is called a Multiple Reentry Permit. It is not a visa.
The terminology will help you some when you go back next year. Look closely at the wording on the various stamps and stickers.
Next you will have a 90 day report to Immigration... The date for this will be on slip of folded paper stapled in your passport pages.
A Work Permit is not a Visa - it is a separate document issued by the Labor Ministry. There is an intertwine between - traditionally a B Visa and a B Visa Extension and a WP, but as has been said certain Extensions of Stay on O Visas can get a Work Permit.
I do know of cases where people have been lectured because they didn't report on the scheduled report date - even though we all know the real rule. It happens - the I/Os sometimes have their own rules.
Foreign owners of businesses in Thailand rely on the accuracy, advice and good workmanship of Accountants and Lawyers they hire. Sometimes bad workmanship stabs a fellow in the back because he didn't just do his job of providing the goods or services but failed to do the accountant's job too. Yes - the owner is supposed to check everything - But then what are the hired professionals for?
With help from a trusted accountant your Thai partner can sign such a letter. However, your Thai partner must have a designation of Director before the partner can sign. The documents to do so must have your signature, the partner's signature and signed by a lawyer. All this can be done but in your geographic situation it will not be easy.
I've observed a different attitude about getting a Tourist Visa or Exempt Entry Extension at the Krabi Office... two years ago they asked for nothing but an address... then I presume with pressure from higher up they started insisting on a Rental / Lease agreement. Among the friends and acquaintances I have known over the past year the Krabi Imm Office still only asks for a Rental / Lease Agreement and do not mention the TM30 even though the renters are renting individual apartments and bungalows. The Krabi Imm office has had a top level management change a few months ago... The office atmosphere now gives off an air of 'stiff collar' - straight laced management style just from observation on 3 occasions. So now I expect more 'by the books' from this office. This is all okay and to be expected with management changes.
Robert - the guy being detained may not - likely is not capable of posting ... battery dead, no time left on his plan to get to the Internet, Airport WiFi may be cut off ... who knows..
Yes Funny thing about Thai Law -- a foreigner can OWN a business in Thailand but Not Operate it - hands on in any way without a Work Permit... The American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand has made an appeal to the Thai Government to change that somewhat ...
