@Ian ********
I carried £
*****
in £50 notes to Thailand to buy a car. I had to declare to HMRC how much I was taking on gov.uk. I carried proof of which Account No. it had come from. Declared it by going through the red channel in Bkk Suvarnabhumi Airport. Took a few minutes to fill in the form. Straight downstairs to the Basement level to Exchange, kiosks there give a good exchange rate.

Take highest denomination clean notes of your countries currency and exchange in Thailand. You'll get a better rate than changing in your own country.

Never exchange in Arrivals !

If your flying into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport head towards the Basement level by the train connection. Kiosks there give a great rate.

If you use cards for money you'll get charged each time you go to the ATM.

If when you go it's 30 day visa exemption, this can be extended for another 30 days at a local immigration office for 1900Thb.

She has to go back to Thailand and reapply again.

Or get a multiple year tourist visa. 2, 5 or 10 year.

On a tourist visa she can only stay 6 months in the UK, back to Thailand for 6 months and then back again.

Never been charged for opening Kasikorn, Bangkok or Siam bank accounts.

They do charge for debit cards though.
