Good to hear it got approved. Under which category did you apply? Was it for work or soft power? I've heard the Madrid embassy is strict on the soft power one and am in Spain myself planning to apply.

The rule is not 180 days per year. When you leave the country and come back, this can be on the same day even, you get the next 180-day stamp in your passport.
