What should an Austrian citizen write as the 'place of issue' when applying for a DTV in Jakarta?

Austrian citizen here with a passport which I got from the Austrian Embassy in Bangkok applying in Jakarta for DTV.

Muay Thai DTV boss didn't have such a case, but would probably write the full name of the authority:

OESTERREICHISCHE BOTSCHAFT BANGKOK

Other options would be:

Austria

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Austrian citizen applying for a DTV visa in Jakarta needs clarification on what to write for the 'place of issue' on their application. Suggestions vary, with some advocating writing exactly what is stated on the passport, such as 'OESTERREICHISCHE BOTSCHAFT BANGKOK', while others recommend simply stating the country, 'Austria'. This has led to a debate within the comments about the correct approach to avoid visa application cancellations.

I put UK, not HMPO, for Place of Issue, in HCMC and 2 times in Jakarta, and was approved for all 3. In fact, not all countries have "Place of Issue", mine has "Authority".

Search the top of the group for “place of issue” and you will find many posts about it.

Many people had application cancelled for writing Bangkok. Write name of your county “Austria”.

My partner and I with both EU passports in Hanoi did not write the issue authority but we put our country

I had the same question a few months ago here:

tl;dr: I put exactly what it said on my passport, which was in German. And then in parentheses I put (German Embassy Bangkok) just to be sure.

I got approved

You issued this passport in Bangkok = Bangkok Thailand

It’s “place of issue” write down what it’s said on your passport
Steve *******
You write Austria in that field. Your home country. Not the branch or embassy.

@Steve ******
not correct. Place = city of issue

odd that I've applied for 7 visas to Thailand, always put Sweden in that field, and never been denied.

I have a DTV, and I wrote Sweden, even though my passport was issued in Bangkok.

Is it possible that Sweden does the same as my home country, the Netherlands? Even though I got my new passport through the embassy in Madrid, the passport is made and issued in the Netherlands. Then they ship it to the embassy who pass it om to me. If that is the case, that is the reason why you rightly wrote Sweden.
Steve *******
@Andries ********
you might have a point. They are produced in Sweden and sent to the embassy. But it still says Bangkok in my passport
Andries *********
@Steve ******
Nope, I do not have a point. 😀 Yours may have been made in Sweden but was issued in Bangkok. For example, my passport says "Minister of Foreign Affairs" as authority.

wrong! you write letter for letter exactly what it is says in Passport, in this case the Embassy in Bangkok.

Edit: for anyone still confused and arguing

I did read it. Did you read all the posts I included from REAL PEOPLE who used that advice?

Calling me anonymous isn’t an insult 😅 I researched real examples extensively and know the advice I’m giving is solid. It worked for me and everyone I know.

Many people (I put examples above) input the issuing authority such as Bangkok for EU passports and were given the reason for cancellation as “wrong place of passport issue”. Don’t make the mistake. NO ONE has input country in “place of issue” and reported cancellation
Tore *********
Anonymous participant 938 lol, lets take the word over a random anonymous facebook person over the official rules and published guidelines from Thai immigration.

You didn’t do research, you didn’t even read or highly misinterpreted the posts you yourself referenced and linked to 🤷🏻‍♂️ Yes I did read them, clearly you didn’t….

If you think NO ONE has been rejected for inputing data mismatching the actual passport; you are in for a surprise at some point.

Most rejection only spesify «mismatching passport data». But good luck to you lol.

@Tore ********
We aren’t talking about mis-matching passport data generally, we are talking specifically about place of issue

It seems showing your name and profile photo make a big difference in being able to provide the right information.

There are REAL LIFE examples of people getting applications cancelled for writing issue authority such as Bangkok (so your link with the rules didn’t seem to work in these cases??) and no one has reported being cancelled for putting their passport country. Hanoi agency told one person to write county in place of issue field.

🤣 yes it was me that misinterpreted and didn’t read the posts….
Anonymous ******************
@Tore ********
no I’m not, they are 2 different fields. All the posts I included are about place of issue not country of passport. Many people have been rejected for writing where there passport was issued rather than the country of their passport in place of issue. And I included all the posts about it.

You said to include the embassy in Bangkok rather than Austria for an Austrian passport, which could get them rejected based on these examples.

Maybe the common mistakes you share from the embassy say to match passport, but there are real life examples (which I shared) from this group, from real people who did this (putting the issuing authority or whatever is in their passport and not the county) in the place of issue field and were rejected
Tore *********
Anonymous participant 938 seriously, go ahead and read the pdf i linked to. And yes of the passport states Bangkok Embassyc then iexactly what it says in the Passport has to be used. Mismatch between passport and application is what gets people rejected. Not by doing in correct per official recommendation and guide directly from thai immigration.

For anyone else reading this, use the official source of information that I linked to. Not random anonymous facebook person….Don’t risk rejection by listening to bad advice….Heck don’t even take my word for it. Read the the PDF from immigration 🤷🏻‍♂️

@Tore ********
For place of issue, it cannot be just “luck” to input country and get approved. Many many people have done this, one person today posted they used country for applying in Jakarta

- UK passport stated HMPO, we put United Kingdom and was approved

- SWISS passport stated Aarau AG and we put Switzerland and was approved

The advice you’ve said is wrong and my intention is to ensure no one is rejected!

NO ONE that inputted their country in “place of issue” has reported a cancellation but MANY people putting the issuing authority e.g. the city they received passport from has (yes - some being notified the reason for their cancellation was place of issue)

Like this post…

There are loads more posts but I’m sure I make my point. I researched this extensively and we didn’t just choose to put the country without being sure it was the correct decision
Tore *********
Anonymous participant 938 you are confusing two different fields. You provide BOTH country of passport AND place of issue. Two very different things.

Ive had multiple Visa to Thailand (and many other countries).

Again “Country of issue” vs “Place of issue”, which is also quite clear from the posts you linked,

wrong - my partner and I both have an issue authority in our passport and wrote the country instead and was approved. Hanoi. Check other posts, people were cancelled for inputting Bangkok as place of issue

Anonymous participant 938 and I put the Norwegian embassy of Amsterdam for a Norwegian passport and was approved. Jakarta. It’s supposed to match the Passport, obviously.

They don’t typically state why it was rejected, id be very surprised if doing it correctly got someone rejected. But humans do mistakes. And you got lucky 🤷🏻‍♂️

Most common reason for rejection is middle name/name issues due to the automatic passport scan without double checking.

Place of issue means “place of issue “ not something i else (obviously)
