 not always the case. I used BKK as a hub for travels around the world, while living in Taiwan, because the best connections often went through there. SO though I usually only stayed a week or two, that still adds up to quite a few trips through Thailand.

Use one of the onward ticket services, or buy a super cheap ticket to a neighboring country. I paid more for changeable tickets for my family to Taiwan, but we are actually heading there eventually

If you have bills that are unacceptable, meet someone going home to that country and change. I managed to unload Brazilian crumpled bills, mainland China bills etc that way.
