TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion primarily revolves around the cost of living in Thailand versus the Philippines, with various commenters providing contrasting opinions. Some argue that the Philippines offers better value for UK pensioners due to annual pension increases, while others assert that Thailand generally has lower costs for accommodation, food, and services. The conversation highlights the subjective nature of evaluating living costs based on individual experiences, preferences, and specific locations within each country.

1. Got good cash reserves, steady income, like going to islands, long term wifey type girlfriends, owning and driving your own car, cook your own food, solo introvert type without needing anyone, prefer speaking only English = Philippines 😎
2. No steady income (maybe like hustle or work), no big cash reserves, short term girlfriends, prefer public transport to driving, prefer eating out to cooking, extrovert like interacting with people, speak more than one language = Thailand 😎
Simply stated the Philippines is 10 years behind Thailand economically but Thailand is 10 years behind the Philippines politically.

Nope, disagree. Food in PH is poor overall, and if you want decent food it's is very expensive. You get more Pesos per dollar, but get less for your money .
Cambodia 25 -50cents for a beer ! 1 yr retirement visa less than $300 and Thailand is next door easy access

Just like in Thailand and the Philippines signs in English in the big city’s big plus they except the US dollar as currency

Something is cheaper, something are more expensive. Tings that are cheap in Thailand can be idioticly expensive in Philippines because it needs to be imported . It also depends where in the country you buy it ! I was in Boracay and experiensed extreme high prices for everything. The more tourists, the higher prices...

Less expensive for qualifty housing, food, public transportation, and set costs wtih medical. Doctors work in the hospitals and their fees are set by law. In Philppines, their fees are unknown until you seek service, and most don't take credit/debit cards. Unlike in Thailand, their fees are separate from the hospital bill. They don't bill directly with insurance companies. You pay up front. You pay for medicines as an outpatient before the nurse will administer them such as injections, IV treatment. An abundance of ATMs, always working, never empty. Security is such an issue in the Philippines in that anyplace which has cash transactions of any great value, has armed guards. Banks, shopping malls inspect bags, When was the last time your bag was checked in Thailand. When was the last time you were questioned at the entrance door to a bank as to what your purpose was of entering the bank?

Ask any OFW in Thailand. They come to work in Thailand for better wages and cheaper costs. Allows them to send more money to their families.

not so.!! internet as been free in all places ive visited .food very cheap. ,taxis cheap using grab .maybe u just been major citys where it is more expensive ,ive taken many taxis there and they defo cheaper than phuket lol.but yes north thailand the taxis are cheap .
. So how much per month do you pay if you want to get internet in your condo for 12 months? Taxi from manilla to angeles city and taxi from Bangkok to Pattaya....similar distance. What's the price comparison? Check it out then get back to me.
Ian *********
never been a taxi manila to angeles ,or bkk to pattaya .taxi phuket airport to rawai .800-1000bht. cebu mactan to my condo was 300 pesso (181bht ). i never took any long distance taxis in phils.in palawan taxi to the robinsons was 100 pesso . taxi rawai to chalong about same distance is 300 bhat .so yep phils is cheaper .but like i said when im in north thailand the tuk tuks and taxis are seriously cheaper there than the south . in udon its just 60 bhat to go most places i go .taxi to airport is 200 bhat .its all to do with where u are . and also which servis u use , in phils u get several offers for taxis on grab .

I prefer Thailand over Philippines on several different aspects, people in Thailand very friendly & respectful, and helpful, Hotels food condos and so on cheaper than Philippines.
Sounds to me like a lot the people commenting on this one ain't actually been there .it is cheaper than thailand.yep some hotels are expensive in the city's but I found it easy in Cebu to rent a condo for a week for £100. On air b n b.beer deffo cheaper.food depends on what u want eat .I did see some 1 comment can't find decent food.lol.i was spoiled for choice and very reasonable.jap food ,Italian etc.and it was cheap.in palawan could find a room £10 up on air b n b.loved it.wasnt impressed with cebu but then it's a big city and a lot poor people.
Been there. Stayed in Cebu for over 2 weeks, few days in Manila and surrounding area. Accommodation costs were about 3-4x higher than in Thailand for poorer quality accommodations.
shure it easy to find a expensive hotel lol.but there are cheap ones too .my advice try air b n b. great deals to be had . yes a standard hotel near airport was £25 .and wasnt impressed ,but all my private stays including the condo at £99 a wk in cebu near the it park was nice. swimming pool and gym too .i never had 1 expensive meal in my whole trip but then i aint daft enough to go an expensive restaurant .i ate and stayed very reasonable especially in palawan in peurto princess .was a great stay loved it there .heading back this coming feb.the only downside is the weather when they get those big storms .and its easier to stay long time .love thailand been going 27 years but they making it harder and harder to stay there or visit long time. this latest tax collecting will most likely see many ex pats go,

The quality of life is better. If you tried to duplicate it in the Philippines it would be more expensive. My first day in a Airbnb I spent 600 for a week to live in a place with no water pressure and cold water 😂 I hated Manila
I can agree..air bnbs in the Philippines are sketchy..broken tap, cockroaches, broken bath, etc..and no one takes responsibility ..I once left sticky notes on almost everything in that unit to tell then what's wrong..never heard from them

Cost of living 9.6% cheaper in the Philippines using major cities as a comparison
I think this is referring to 'living costs' meaning a 12 month rental lease option. For travelers who visit for a few weeks, the cost for accomodations are much higher than in Thailand and you get poorer quality in PH for that higher price.
you think? Well here are the hard facts. No argument.
Dave *****************************
Cost of Living in Manila is 9.3% lower than in Bangkok (without rent)
Cost of Living Including Rent in Manila is 9.0% lower than in Bangkok
Rent Prices in Manila are 8.0% lower than in Bangkok
Restaurant Prices in Manila are 12.6% higher than in Bangkok
Groceries Prices in Manila are 10.0% lower than in Bangkok

I spend a lot of my time in Phuket which some say is expensive but trust me, Cebu and Moalboal where I am currently is far more expensive than Phuket in all aspects also the roads and environment are 3 Rd world and not much worth seeing in these areas , whole area is slum like full of beggars , I feel sorry for the people living here and can not understand how they can afford to live . Phuket and Thailand much better in all aspects along with Vietnam where I have recently visited . Apparently the Provinces and islands in the Philippines are more affordable, too easy to stick to Thailand ,that ticks all the boxes .
apparently you stayed in a very luxurious resort in Moalboal..been there with my kids for a week.got the whole resort for ourselves without breaking my bank..local market to buy everyday necessities is ok for low budget..so it depends where you stay..
Where I stayed not luxurious resort , older resort with dated facilities, ok but definitely not high end , area not perfect I would not stay here again , long way from beach and needed to hire motor bike to get around to go restaurants and shopping etc. options for food very limited and very expensive in my opinion compared to Thailand which the question asked about , condition of the roads everywhere I have been on are poorly maintained with pot holes everywhere like a 3 Rd world country . The roads in Phuket have been recently been resurfaced in most main areas of Phuket and currently being done to a high standard , better than Australia. I stay in Rawai ,Phuket, Thailand and know what I am talking about , I can not see myself coming back to the Philippines for many reasons , one being the poor roads , cost of food and accommodation , variation of exchange rates of up to 30 % from money changers etc.

Beautiful islands el Nido, Boracay, cebu and others
we go to bar only those hours or we go when we want to have fun as per our convinience, happy hours every where but those are odd hours most of the time we go at night after 9 or 10pm
Price is not just happy hours, regular price anytime we go
many times, none of clubs has less than 250bhat for beer and even in good restaurants
Small sports bar it’s 120-150bhat
Street vendors sit out areas may be around 60-80 bhat

What a great strategy. You probably get 14,000 rupees in Bali. You are a millionaire for a just few dollars.

The big advantage for UK state pensioners is that you get annual pension increases in the Philippines. In Thailand UK pensions are frozen and you receive no increases. Totally unfair.

Try Philippines, get mugged, burglared and whatnot, and then be happy that the cost of living is lowest.
…or…
Try Thailand, enjoy low cost of living and enjoy how they try to haggle you out of your money, with which a smart person can deal, and feel perfectly safe.
Your choice. I’d say that for those with an IQ below 100 (not meaning anything personal to you - sorry if that seems so) Philippines is a good choice. Those above 100 would likely prefer Thailand.
Now, before anyone gets upset, there are plenty other reasons to prefer one or the other country, but if money is your only motivation then imho Thailand is the better choice between the two.
No offence, but The Philippines doesn't seem quality as Thailand.
Simon ********
Philippines probably worst value country in Asia, especially for accommodation. Thailand much Morecambe expensive than before but much better value.
Jon ********
That’s an absurd statement as banks would be going crazy doing arbitrage

Thailand is cheaper. Accommodation costs less, food costs less and both are better quality. I think alcohol costs more in thailand but that doesn’t affect me.
mentioned Restaurant Food and Imported Groceries… They are generally higher in the Philippines.
But yes, general day-to-day living costs, and employment (hiring local workers) for example, you get a lot more bang for your buck.
Paul ******************
My average monthly water bill in Thailand is around £1.50 a month (in UK currency) average water bill in the UK can be as high as £100 a month. Philippines can do better than Thailand with things like water bills? Restaurant costs? Taxis? I got hustled by a taxi driver in Manila. Hotels are definitely expensive. I was happy to return to Thailand, where it’s not too ‘Americanized” also.
That's what the Americans have done to the Philippines and what they will do to Thailand with this current invasion of the disciples of the clueless you tubers/ vloggers.
No... you actually get less in Philippines for same amount of money. The only thing cheaper (in some areas) are the fees from the girls
The same quality of a condo costs more, restaurants cost more, and you never know if anything will work that day or not. "Sorry sirrrr, not abailable" is the phrase you will constantly.
If you compare apples to apples you get more for your money in TH. Been there done that

Well up to now nobody is paying tax from foreign income, if this really would be implemented it would take years to execute the new law, so just relax. And those few countries left without taxing are following now…
there are NO new laws. Your first tax payment is due march 2025. You became liable to Thai income tas as of 1st jan 2024. But, as of 8th October 2024: The Half-Year Tax Filing Deadline is Fast Approaching... Do You Need to File a PND94?
This only applies to certain types of income. The two most common cases we assist with are:
Those with Thai rental income.
Those who have been in Thailand for 180 days or more and have remitted (transferred) overseas rental property income to Thailand.
Other situations that may require filing include:
Working as an individual contractor.
Income from a liberal profession.
Running a business, commerce, agriculture, or transport.

I have been Living in BKK for over 2 years and am surprised how more expensive it is in general. BUT, Lazada is great!
genius. Try Vietnam and Cambodia you'll get millions for a dollar but it's meaningless. The question is how far will your dollars go in each place. Philippines is cheaper for medicines and tinned meats (eg spam and luncheon meat) however in philippines rents are higher...hotels more expensive...food and transportation more expensive. Thailand girls are more expensive so best bring a filipina lol
Not really been to PI several times. Dad retired there and has a Filipino wife. The touristy spots are horrible and expensive, but you get away from the Westernized and chain places, I found it to be great.
I am continuing to learn, so there is that. I am not a know-it-all or a keyboard warrior.
Actually James, for UK pensioners, going to the Philippinnes WILL increase your money! UK has no reciprocal pension agreement with Thailand which means your pension is frozen when you leave UK. If you retire in Philippines you receive annual state pension increases.
true..and there is no stable commodity price..if you go to a market vendors price their commodities as they wish..here in Thailand, 20baht is always 20baht..
yes he is asking if we knew that going to Philipines would see us get more money, I didn't know that. That's obviously different to getting more for your money so i'm intrigued as where the free money is coming from.
