at some point he will have to go to immigration, so why not just do it! The old passport is no longer valid. I transferred everything across to my new passport, it's a simple process.

Go to immigration ASAP and they can handle it. You will get a form, but take a full photocopy of your old passport and the face page of the new one.

Other people suggest just go to another hotel one night and then go back and do a TM 30 online.

what is considered Chiang Mai? Chiang Mai has around 500,000 within 5 minutes of the old city and probably over 1 million within 30 minutes of the old city.
