So, it is established as common advise that crossing into Thailand on land borders from Laos is the safest bet for travelers with a history of frequently visiting (or COVID extensions). But getting to Laos by air from Europe is a bit cumbersome.

Thus, I am wondering what the latest reports on the southern land borders with Malaysia are - particularly Padang Besar. Flying into Kuala Lumpur and then taking the modern, electrified train to that border crossing sounds tempting.

Then again, there are some (albeit a bit dated) reports of people suggesting that border crossing is particularly rude on the Thai side.

It is also a bit confusing crossing there, as there are two ways to cross: 1) from the Malaysian train into a Thai train (that only runs two times a day) - in which case stamping out and stamping in happens both and conveniently so in the train station on the Malaysian side in between separate tracks. Or 2) from the Malaysian train onwards over land (in which case the convenient immigrations booths inside the train station cannot be used, but the actual land border booths have to be used - and while there is a pedestrian crossing from the train station over the tracks to the actual land borders, it has been shut down by the government, forcing people to take a local taxi, instead of just walking across).

Who can share some recent experiences of this border crossing?

Also, could anybody advise on how to get from that border directly to Hat Yai Airport instead of Hat Yai downtown?

Cheers.

Chiang Khong border bounce report.

Took me 2hours from leaving car on parking to going back with 45more days in passport.

The land border is very quiet, live going slow here šŸ˜Š

Everything went pretty smoothly I had previously 12 COVID extensions on top of 60days tourist visa but no one made any problem got 45days stamp.

Tickets to the bus: 2x25b

I was also asked to pay additional fee 20b on Lao border ;)

Any word on when the land border with Cambodia may open? I'd like to visit Angkor Wat but right now the only way to get there that I am aware of is fly from BKK to Phnom Penh and then fly again to Seim Reap. I would prefer to simply get a car and cross the land border, but as far as I can tell it's still closed.

Any advice or insight? Thanks

Popped up to Laos border today, ate lunch and came back. Got stamped in no questions asked, despite being in LOS over 10 months this year, and having been harassed and almost kicked out when arriving to Don Muang airport few months ago. So the kind 2 gentlemen from this group were spot on... seems land border never cares, the airports are where all the corruption, hassling, etc happens. Border police did seem to look at my stamps a bit today to make sure I wasn't over 2x land crossings (I assume) and maybe I got a nice guy but he didn't even hesitate. I'm hoping new routes from Udon and CM airports prove to be less hassling than Bangkok airports soon...

Question: If I have one land border visa entry left for the year, where should I fly to make it the quickest turnaround possible?

Though I would rather pick the least amount of hassles at the border as opposed to quickest turnaround.

My last land border entry was at the Friendship Bridge. Thanks!
