What should we do about transferring our Thai visa stamp to a new passport after renewing it?

Hello. We are American citizens. We arrived and received a 60 day visa exempt entry. We had to renew our passports by mail at the us embassy in Bangkok, they were full. We received our new passports a few days ago, our old ones have been cancelled. We have the form to transfer the stamp into the new passport and the copies we need from both passports. We plan on leaving by train to Padang Besar next month. We went to Jomtien immigration today to get the stamps transferred and they told us they will do it at the border. This doesn't sound right. The old passports are cancelled, meaning we do not currently have a valid entry stamp. The border is a long way from everywhere if we go there and they won't move the stamp. Any advise?
Answer summary
American citizens who recently renewed their passports after entering Thailand on a 60-day visa exempt entry are seeking advice on transferring their entry stamp from their old, cancelled passports to their new ones. After visiting Jomtien immigration, they were informed the transfer could only occur at the border, which raises concerns due to the invalidation of the original entry stamp. Community comments suggest that no transfer is necessary as long as both passports are held, and they advise handling the process at the border when departing.

You arrived on visa exemption. Nothing to transfer. You need to leave by stamped date on old passport or do a boarder bounce and come in fresh on new passport.

I advise you in the future renew your passports 6 months before you travel. I'm surprised they let you in with your PP about to expire.

Larry Wheeler - it wasn't about to expire, it was about full. I've renewed it twice now. Thanks for the advice. 🙄

It’s fine as long as you have both the old and new passport. No need to transfer. May take a little longer but it’s normal.

I've had to do the same before. Just hand them the passport you came in with and the new one, tell them you had to get a new passport, they'll look everything up, and stamp you out.Just takes a few minutes longer and you'll have to talk to the officer. Not a big deal

This is correct, as you are not residing here and don't have any business with an immigration office. IF you were attempting to get a 30-day extension to your visa-exempt entry, it might be a different story.

This type of scenario happens enough times it is handled rather routinely at airports. Stamp transfers at borders may not be as common, but they'll have to do it so don't sweat it.

What a nice choice in a location to get your passport renewed, and a lot faster than doing it in the states. If you were on any long term visa/extension, then you would go to immigration to get the two passports linked, and a archive number stamped in it. As just a tourist that is done by just leaving and returning the next time everything updates. Facial recognition, and fingerprint, links them.

Kool Breez yes but this is done at the provincial office. In this case that would be Chonburi for Jomtiem.

What do you mean with the border is a long way from everywhere?

Hat Yai has an Immigration office in case you need it.

I expect you want to travel to Malaysia?

For a border run I have bad experiences with Padang Besar, getting out no problem, but getting back in same day they don't like.

About 10 years ago I went to Immigration where I live in E-sarn to change passports due to renewal.

They told me to do it at the bridge when I went across to Lao the next time.

So, that's what I did in Mukdahan prior to crossing to Lao.

Went to small Immigration office off to the side, gave them both passports . All sorted in 10 min and from memory they charged me a couple of hundred baht.

Very straight forward and easy.

Tom Pola - shouldn't cost anything, but I'm OK with paying a fee. Thanks.

Scot Smith Yeah forgot to mention that.

No receipt offered.

Resident Certificates should be free and were for many years but these days 500 baht seems to be the going rate. Sometimes I joke with them and ask for a receipt.

Ive had a yellow book and pink ID card for 15 years or so. Didn't need a Resident Certificate for many years then 2 years ago I renewed my driving license . As I only had a tourist visa at the time i could only get a 2 year license . Yellow book and pink card no longer accepted had to go to Immigration, show them my yellow book and ID card and get my Resident Certificate.

If you arrived recently you should carefully check your leave by date, because you will only have received 30 days visa exempt.

They have exit gates at BKK now that don't stamp you out. Everything is in the system. Don't worry, but keep your old passport handy.

Kevin Teter - I only experience the transfer in the case when I return to Thailand on a re-entry permit/multiple entry visa and not on a "visa-exempt". @ Scot Smith - Keep both passports with you at all times (you are legally required to have passport on you at all times anyway), so that you can show proof. You hopefully have proof that your new passport was obtained in Thailand on a specific date/month, which would also show the paper trail.
Scot *******

OP
Kevin Teter - we have nothing but time. 😉

I guess that's the right answer. Google spent time scaring us into thinking we would be rejected at the border trying to leave.

Just make sure you have the old and the new passport with you so they can see a stamp that you entered Thailand but I think you should be good.

Normally, Thailand requires you to have 2 full empty visa pages available when you enter the country. I remember my passport being checked onThai airways check-in in Sydney for that, because one passenger was being returned home for that reason.

If you entered visa exempt there's nothing for immigration to transfer. Just travel with both passports

- it's all immigration, but I've just been reading that it's a different immigration office that handles that stamp, meaning at the border. The Jomtien office would be used to move extension stamps that they put in. Thank you. Google sure gives bad advice all the time.
Steve******
Steve******
Scot Smith I don't get what you want to get transferred at the border or better to say you are worried that they won't transfer.

You entered visa exempt. The stamp is in your old passport so the advice of John makes sense to me: carry both.

If you want to leave to Malaysia, they will stamp your departure and everything is fine.

When you come back, you will get a new visa exempt stamp for 30 days as long as your travel history supports your tourist status.
