Your marriage is recognised in Thailand and vice versa. You only need to have your US Marriage Certificate Translated into Thai and you make the application at an Immigration Centre. The best advice would be is to ask your Wife to go into your local Immigration Centre and ask the Question.
Obtain a 6 Month Visa from your Home Country's Embassy which is the most economical way. Or you will receive 30 days when entering the Country then obtain a 30 Day attention at an Immigration Centre and then 2 Land Border Visa Run extensions.

I think ask at your local immigration office is best. I do think though it's possibly an administration error on there part at the Embassy and they have tried to correct it. In any case a quick trip to your local immigration office will clarify things for you.
If you haven't got a "Multi Entry" stamp in your Passport you will need to go to Immigration a few days before your trip and ask for an Exit stamp so your Extension doesn't become void.
