we were moving here on a retirement visa, and agent explained we could only get duty exemption if we were coming on a work permit, as there is then a reasonable expectation the furniture /effects would leave the country again when work contract completed.
I managed to import a 20 foot container of used furniture effects, 7 years ago - it’s possible, the agent in BKK will liaise with customs, to determine a taxable value based on the manifest that the packers generate. I seem to recall I paid about USD1200 in total for import taxes and agents fees, it was a full container with all our furniture and appliances……….good luck…..
Most countries will not allow non residents to open a bank account, even through a lawyer or agent, the fact that this was possible in Thailand up until recently was a result of corrupt and money grabbing practices. Arguably it was tourists who refused to follow the rules that fueled this practice. Many of us followed the rules, admittedly the insurance requirements has made this more challenging but it’s still possible.
Very hard to escape the clutches of an agent if they have illegally funded your retirement visa, often requires leaving Thailand and starting from scratch, switching to another agent merely exacerbates the problem….
once they get the e gate‘s fully rolled out no immig engagement at all just wander through like Singapore after photo and biometrics travel will be less of a chore for sure
