What should I do if my Bangkok Bank account is locked and I'm not near my branch?

Hello everyone, yesterday I got a notification from Bangkok Bank so that I have to visit the Branch within 30 days where I opened my account. My account is locked and I can't do any payments or transfers .

The problem is I am not in that city anymore. I went to a Bangkok Bank branch where I am staying now and they said there is no way and I should go there.

I don't want to comment on the stupidity of this rule but I want to ask you all if you had this issue and what did you do? Is there a way to avoid going to the city where my branch is?

Thank you in advance for your advices. πŸ™πŸ˜Š

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user reported that their Bangkok Bank account was locked, requiring them to visit the branch where they initially opened their account for unlocking. This poses a problem as the user is currently in a different city, and other branches cannot assist. Several comments shared experiences confirming that most issues must be resolved at the original branch. Suggestions discussed included the difficulties faced in accessing services while overseas and whether contacting the branch over the phone could provide any alternative solutions. The thread highlighted frustrations with banking policies and the implications for expats managing finances in Thailand.
Steve ****
You go to the original branch
Joe *****
As an American I have zero issues. The banks in Thailand respect me and don't ask me for anything. The women adore me and the men laugh at all my jokes. Im assuming most of the commentators here are Canadian?
Joe *****
Well u guys can all go back to your home country or stop whining and deal with this small relatively easy inconvenience. Honestly I wish all u whiners would head out of Thailand. Youre a pathetic bunch of delicate little whiny bxxxtches
Jordan *****
@Joe ****
you are just a shill for abusive and opaque bank policies. What Bangkok Bank did in the past months freezing and closing accounts for no reason is unnacceptable. Other banks, like the one I use are managing everything better.
Joe *****
Jordan Ptz vote with your feet and tell everyone u know back home how bad it is here. Enjoy that amazing cost of living and dating scene back home:)

This happened to us too. We are in india. We went to the bank before leaving and told there would be no issue. We can't phone the bank none of the numbers connect. Thank God we have money in our account in new zealand. But this is madness we have a house and everything in this country. They say they want more tourist well they need to stop making it so bloody hard for people. We even ad to pay $1000 for sme life insurance to get the account then they lock you out. So frustrating makes us other want to go back. Sell up and move to another country that wants us to send or money not freeze us out.
David *******
@Terri *******
What's it got to do with tourists?
Stefano ****
I have had a kasikorn bank account for 15 years but I am a tourist who comes to Thailand for 2 or 3 months a year I deposit money but then I use it for holidays in Thai my question is I will have problems too thank you if someone can kindly inform me

My son has same problem. . In UK. His UK bank wants to see his passport but he's not in UK and would have to fly in . So it's not just Thailand.
Deniz *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Lynnette ******
we are not talking about that.

We are talking about a Bank in Thailand that forces you to go to the branch in a city where you don't live anymore just only to verify yourself. I was in two other branches and presented my passport and everything needed but they cannot do anything. Now I have to pay for the journey to that city and waste my valuable time for only getting verified within some minutes and then come back to where I am now.
Lynnette *******
@Deniz ********
I know it's about Thailand 🀦. I'm pointing out it's happening in other countries, because people think it's only Thailand. One son had to fly from USA to Thailand. And my other son would need to fly from Thailand to UK to verify his UK bank account. Annoying isn't it.
Michael ********
@Lynnette ******
Same for me as well for UK bank account
Jennifer ******
Go there and close the account and then go back to where you're at now and open a new account.
Deniz *********

@Jennifer *****
that is it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

We all know this will work.

But the question was , is there any way to avoid to go there and so to save money and valuable time?

πŸ™πŸ™
Jennifer ******
@Deniz ********
Sadly no. Have tried it and the only way was to show up in person.
Ludwig ***********
Due to he increasing number of phone scams, all banks have been instructed to check whether every customer’s phone contract is under the same name as their bank account. When this is not the case, they need to see the customer in person to do an identity check.
Robert **************
I am back in the USA for several months. Like many others I made sure my tel. number matched the number on record of my account, got the face scan but I left shortly after getting my year extension and didn’t get a chance to show the bank my long terms visa/extension. I called the bank and they were kind enough to accept copies of my extension stamp, passport bio page and the 1900 baht receipt for the extension. Hopefully my account will be unlocked soon
Det *******
It is like Bangkok bank doesn’t want customers.
Michael *******
All the banks are clamping down, I went through same issues with SCB, irritating to say the least especially as branches have been rammed with people recently, all going through the same challenges actually feel for the staff can’t be easy for them dealing with all these GOM
David *******
@Det ******
They don't want dodgy customers, so they're weeding out the suspicious ones

Seems you've been caught up in the net which I've managed to escape. So you've never used an agent, and your phone number has been certified as correct?

Not true, they are angering the good ones.
David *******
@Det ******
I'm a good customer, they're not angering me!
Det *******
@David ******
But many others are having issues, hopefully your turn never comes. If it does, it will be at the worst possible moment.
Michael *******
@Det ******
my on line banking got cut the day I was flying overseas for a week, great timing - I just went to the ATM to withdraw some of that stuff called cash, to tide me over until I flew back and was able to get to the branch - always a solution…..

@Michael ******
Redundancy has worked for me, so far. I’m sure those with power will work at reducing my options.

Can’t speak for other countries, but this is common in Mexico, too. If you don’t go to your original branch, forget it.
Michael *******
open a new account with the branch where you live, pointless trying to push sh*t uphill
Jim *********
@Michael ******
not that easy
Deniz *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Michael ******
yes but the money on the old account must be released and it's only possible when you go to that branch where your account was done.
Michael *******
You probably have to open a local account anyway, so take care of that and whilst you’re at it discuss transfer of your funds from your previous account, if its same bank should be straightforward worst case scenario is you have to travel to previous location to do transfer but at least you have an account to move it to and your not flying around with bundles of cash…….
Euan ********
@Michael ******
definitely.

Was chatting to a fella this morning, his account is on Samui and this is the 2nd time this year he's needed to verify.

I just went to the branch and Pattaya. Ther was probably a hundred people waiting. Luckily I got there an hour before they open and was able to do what was needed. You need to bring your passport and one more form of ID from this country luckily I had a Thai driver's license if you don't then you're going to have to have an electric or water bill in your name. The whole process took over a half hour for me alone I have no idea how they're going to get through all the people that are waiting. When it was finished she informed me that stuff was sent to Bangkok and in a week or so my account will be unfrozen. Luckily I brought cash also with me from the states.

I'm in same position in England. My terak visited the bank this morning and they informed her, as long as I have the correct paperwork just visit the bank and show them on my return to Thailand

You can always try calling. But my personal experience with Bangkok bank is that everything has to be done at the original branch where you opened the account.

There's a lot of these going on the past few days.....I was wondering does it make a difference when u have open a bank acct by yourself or by agents? Many ppl have verify their phone number and kyc but still get blocked ( it might not be the reason)
William *********
@Jesper ******
that's a good question. The bank lady kept saying I have a tourist visa but I have a retirement visa, which I did with an agent. I think it's all the people who used an agent while on a visa exemption, but i'm not sure.

you need to go back to your branch unfortunately. My recommendation is to get a new bank a new account where your staying and advise manager/staff of Bangkok bank you will withdraw all you funds from your home branch to your new bank and account. Remember for Non O extensions you need to show a certain minimum amount for a new extension.

You start off criticising people for having bank accounts in Thailand. What you don't realise is that those of us that live here full-time are required to have a bank account to satisfy a REAL visa. You come here as a sex tourist on 60-day free entry stamps, marry the first bar girl who shows interest in you and then she drags you away to that shithole Isaan. Now you visit her twice a year for a month at a time and tell yourself you have the perfect life. What do you think she does when you're not there? You can take the girl out of the bar, but you can't take the bar out of the girl πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I donβ€˜t understand why people are so astonished about this right now? Every customer from the various banks were warned several months ago by mail, on the apps and through media, over and over again. First the issue with sim name and no. to match exactly with the account, then the new face scan to allow inbound transfers > 50k thb per day and so on. Why did so many people ignored these announcements and warnings?
Steve ******
@Sue *********
I didn't get a warning and my account got blocked yesterday πŸ€”

I think they use a strange algorithm πŸ˜‰ Initiallly they were talking about mule accounts then suspicious accounts with no movement and suddenly so many suspended accounts resulted in beeing suspicious? 😏

this isn't the Sim stuff. A lot of people who had the Sims matching etc still recieved this problem.

It might be worth calling the branch itself, probably need a Thai person to do. And try find out what you need to do. Il

Does your mobile phone name match your bank account? Which carrier you with?

I moved all my accounts to a local bank to avoid this when I retired working from Bangkok. Probably easier said than done now aday.

the branch at which you open your account is considered your 'primary/main' branch, and a few services/requirements must be done there, but you can change this to a more preferred branch (probably have to do this in that primary branch too, but I did over the phone as my primary branch had closed and they automatically moved it to another branch, not of my choice).
