Khao Kho in petchabun is exactly like this.

If you want to be very cold I can recommend phu tubberk, one thousand 500 meter above sea.

I been there when temperature 5c. No aircon there

You can take the train from Kamsawath station in Vientiane to Udon. It doesn't stop at the border crossing, stamp out are done at the station and stamp in at Nong Khai station. I did this 2 weeks ago.

Actually Udon Thani immigration usually doesn't bother with it.

But as you say it doesn't hurt to check.
