I am 73 and have already made the decision not to go back to Thailand after living there for 15 years. There will be more hoops to jump through once the country opens up and I am done jumping through their hoops. There are many other countries that are much easier to retire in.
I arrived in the US the 7th of last month. My flight out of Udon Thani was the last one before they shut down. I was then on one of the last flights from the US via Tokyo and luckily to get home. I have a Thai wife and a son who has dual citizenship. My current plan is to wait all of this out at home with no intention of returning to Thailand in the near future. My personal feeling is that the Thai government should treat us a bit different if we have wives or children left behind in Thailand, but that will never happen. Who knows how many hoops we will have to jump through to get back to see our loved ones. We are at the Thai government's mercy, which is not a very good place to be.
I have lived in Thailand for 15 years and I am now back in the US thinking that I may not return. Many, many changes over those 15 years and there will still be more once they open up the country again. I believe that immigration will now require health certificates and health insurance for everyone that is not a Thai national. Pile that on top of all the visa requirements that existed before the epidemic and I am out. Vietnam, Cambodia or Malaysia would be a better choice now for long term visas and more inexpensive than Thailand. If you like being harassed and jumping through endless hoops, go ahead and retire or visit Thailand.
With all the immigration confusion and additional requirements, I probably won't be going back to Thailand before December where my wife and son are. I might as well wait for a vaccine.
