I understand your point, however, issuing 5 year passports also seems odd to me.

And, in Korea (Korean visas I mean), although this has nothing to do with Thailand, it's customary that no visa (except the PR) can go beyond your passport exportation date.

Korea embassy mentioned having 5 years as a requirement. I can't confirm whether is true or not, as my passport had more than 5 years when they approved it.
