DTV remote worker visa approved in the "infamous" Kuala Lumpur embassy. They requested lots of documents but once I provided everything, it was approved in less than 24 hours! I just wanted to share it for some people who said that the embassy in Malaysia was bad, as it worked for me, and also to THANK YOU EVERYONE who helped me in this group with their knowledge and opinions 🙏

Hi everyone,

I applied for the DTV visa through the Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and ran into something quite unexpected.

I submitted my application with all the documents that were originally listed in the official DTV requirements. However, after submission the system is now asking me to upload 7 additional documents.

Some of these are extremely difficult (and in my case even impossible) to provide. This is quite frustrating, because if I had known beforehand that these documents would be required, I might not have applied in the first place and could have saved the 350 € application fee.

Anyways, for now, my plan is to upload the documents I do have, and for the ones that are not applicable to my situation provide short explanation PDFs.

Has anyone applying through KL experienced something similar?

If so, did the embassy accept explanations for these items, or did they insist on the exact documents?

I would really appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences.

Update:

My application got approved (total processing time: 12 days). 🥳

I submitted all the documents I had and provided short explanation PDFs for the documents that were not possible in my situation (e.g. embassy authentication, long-term lease), as I’m operating an international business across different jurisdictions.

That approach was accepted without any issues. So thanks to everyone who shared helpful input, it really kept me going, I appreciate it!

And for anyone currently in a similar situation: I know how frustrating it can feel, but in my case, providing clear explanations really helped.

Super anxious after applying for DTV in Kuala Lumpur over a week ago. Blowing up money on hotels, trying to do things outside but it just stresses me so much I can't as I have bad feelings. They hit me with requirements which I didn't expect earlier and sadly I didn't read this group before and anyway have tickets to KL for planned short trip so I thought I will apply here.

I have very complicated work situation. Company I worked for is registered in one country (there is not even consulate of this country to authenticate; they inform on website it must be done in embassy in... Bangkok, as they don't provide such services) and contract with address from another country (as they hire contractors from country with low taxes, most likely), digitally signed by both parties using Docusign.

I uploaded all of it a week ago but not exactly like they want from this very demanding list...

Any success stories from KL, Malaysia to cheer me up?

This is meant as a warning. Do not use the embassy in Kuala Lumpur to obtain your DTV.

I was issued my DTV there and it was not for 5 years, but until the expiration of my passport...about 3 years, in my case.

Clearly, someone in KL did it wrong. However, it would appear that I have no recourse.

Double success story from KL! I'm so happy to finally be able to make this post. Hopefully, it will help people intending to use the Kuala Lumpur embassy for their DTV.

I used the soft power (medical treatment) route for my DTV. Initially provided a 3-month treatment plan, bank statements for 6 months, passport, photo, etc. After 6 business days, they requested additional documents:

* All passport pages including empty ones

* 1-year treatment plan

* letter from the hospital "that you have conditions that specifically require medical treatment in Thailand"

I requested these from the hospital and they were very kind to respond quickly, so I uploaded the additional documents on the following day. After 5 business days my DTV was approved, total waiting time a little over 2 weeks.

It was time to start the process for my wife, which I expected to be faster and more straightforward...

She applied for DTV the same day I got mine, selecting the spouse route, provided the basic docs and our marriage cert. After 5 business days, additional documents were requested:

* All passport pages including empty ones

* Proof of prolonged residence in Thailand for at least 6 months, such as a condominium rental agreement, lease agreement etc.

* A copy of the company's registration/business license and employment contract of the main visa applicant - A professional portfolio showcasing digital nomad, remote worker of the main visa applicant.

Luckily, we already had the rental agreement, but the last one was a bit confusing. In its place we submitted a document with a cover page explaining that I got my DTV for a medical treatment and provided all related docs. After 6 business days, she got her visa, again the total waiting time was about 15-16 calendar days.

After listing the facts, I want to share some personal thoughts:

* You may want to reconsider the medical route in KL if you don't have a valid medical condition requiring a one-year treatment and arrangements in place with a hospital ready to provide you with all the paperwork.

* As you see, they might request seemingly unrelated things, but be ready to just work with them and you will get to the finish line. Maybe it is best not to argue or ask questions, just give them the requested documents.

* Waiting time is obviously longer than other options in Asia, waiting for weeks while reading how people get approved in days or even hours was not fun. We had enough time so it wasn't a problem for us, plan accordingly.

* Some of the additional documents requested were unexpected. Some people may use the word "strict" to describe their policy; read my case and decide for yourself.

I want to thank all of you who contribute here, this group has been a great source of information!

Hello! I’m planning to apply for a soft-power DTV via Kuala Lumpur embassy next month. Does anyone know what to do for this “required documentation”; I’m unemployed at the moment and haven’t had any income in the last 6 months.

Do they just want to see my bank statements or will this be a deal-breaker?

This is from my husband:

I wanted to share my experience (so far) of applying for the DTV visa as a business owner from the UK applying in Kuala Lumpur. This will be lengthy but has some info which’ll stop you having to go back (which I have to do)

Documents I took to the embassy:

• 6 months bank statements from my personal account

• 6 months bank statements from my business account

• Business registration

• Passport

• 2 photos

• Application Form

• Contract for our largest client detailing the type of work we carry out

• Letter from the British embassy in Malaysia confirming they don’t authenticate documents (IMPORTANT)

First thing to mention is that they didn’t take into account my bank statements from my business account, these were given back to me without them looking - they only cared about what was in my personal account. They didn’t look through my personal bank statements, merely looked at the closing balance and ticked it off.

If you own a business you will be asked to get your registration documents authenticated by the British embassy - the British embassy in Malaysia DO NOT provide this service. They have a templated letter which you can download and print on the embassy website to avoid any back and forth. When I provided this, they were happy for my documents to not be authenticated.

I was told to come back with some additional info, some I understand, one document I found a bit bizarre.

I need to provide pay slips of payments to myself, payments highlighted on my business bank statements weren’t going to cut it - fair enough.

I also have to create a letter explaining that I work remotely, which I can then sign myself as a director of my company.

I was also told I needed to provide a 6 month rental agreement for a property in Thailand before I could apply…

I explained that if I don’t receive the DTV visa I won’t be going to Thailand for that period of time so wouldn’t want to sign a rental agreement for a property I may never get to live in…but they insisted this was a MUST before I could apply for the visa.

The rental agreement has to be for a condo/apartment it can’t be a hotel.

So bit of an odd one, need to look at what to do here. Will be hopefully heading back to the embassy in the coming days so will update this post.

Hope this helps!

Hey guys,

Thanks to the admins for adding me to the group.

I was just wondering if anyone had attempted to apply (either in person or by using an agent if there is one) for a tourist visa in the Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur?

If so, what was it like and what are the requirements asked from them?

I generally do visa runs between Malaysia and Thailand. My two annual land border runs are used and I'm currently looking/researching for any options/alternatives to prolong my stay here. I am based in Malaysia and my visa is set to expire in one month.

I am shocked to learn that Jim's Place Cafe in Penang is closed since the pandemic. So my options are either (a) to self apply through the Thai Embassy in KL or (b) fly to Hat Yai while doing the visa run from there - which too carry its risk.

Any insights, information or recommendations will be highly appreciated.

Thanks again! 🙂🙏
