I didn't say they had to be "a resident". I meant the country they are residing in at the time aka "staying". Perhaps using formal wording for "staying" is not how you'd phrase it. I've edited it.

You can apply from home country or a country you can show proof you are residing or staying in. Entry stamp, accommodation address.

been there done that. Lol. I opened my bank account on exempt entry with a bit of creative arguing. I didn't have a second ID. . So offered my bus pass and showed them it said "Cornwall council" and they accepted it. I know better now! Don't do as I do. 🤦

You could have got the Non-O before arriving then you could open a bank account. Is there some reason you applied for tourist visa before arriving instead of non-O based on retirement?

Airbnb is legal in many condos so long as for one month or longer. Some have hotel licence and there are Airbnb villas too.

so what visa are you on in Thailand? Why did you find it so hard to get a Thai SIM registered to your name and passport?
