it was very crowded when I went through, March 2020, elbow to elbow and hundreds waiting. They noticed me waiting in the back of the pack, sent someone to pluck me and bring me straight to the front of the line.

I used to live in Mae Sot. I found out that farangs typically don't have to wait in line. I thought it would take hours to get to the counter, coming back into Thailand, but the immigration officer instructed somebody to bring me to the front of the line, and everyone else waiting acted unfased by it . Being a foreigner in Mae Sot has it's perks. Just an FYI in case you go back there again.
