Which SUV is better: Toyota Fortuner or Ford Everest?

We are trying to decide between a new SUV. She wants a Toyota Fortuner. I am leaning towards a Ford Everest. I'm looking for opinions and pros/cons about them both.

My research shows that the Everest is favorable, but I want to hear it from those who might have had either one or can direct me to a group to learn more.

Edit: this is for driving in the city. Not for offroad or all terrain use.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion compares the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest as potential SUV choices for city driving in Thailand. Numerous commenters favor the Fortuner, citing its reliability, lower maintenance costs, and better resale value, while some users note advantages of the Everest, such as more modern features and overall comfort. Reliability issues with Ford vehicles and higher parts costs are highlighted as major concerns. Ultimately, user sentiment heavily leans towards Toyota for its long-term performance and value retention.

Toyota is ten times better than Ford, period.

Ford just did massive recall on Everest and their vans. Fortuner about to release a whole new look and chasis etc. Google them

Toyota - every time!!!

Fords are not great cars or trucks. They roll over easily and start on fire . Toyota trucks and cars are much more reliable and safe, they hold their resale value much better too

I’ve had a Nissan terra since 2018. Very good car - get around 850kms from a full tank. Cheap to service and run

Toyota is best in Thailand, and as you notice fortuners hold their value for many years. Ford has many issues and aren't reliable in Thailand.
Stephen ******
In Australia the Everest, in Thailand the Fortuna.

The Everest wins out on the usual comparisons BUT Thailand has a strong bias towards Toyota and eventual resale will be much easier and much better.
Ron *******
Toyota, by a long mile.

Definitely Toyota, way better then Ford.

Toyota Fortuna. Love it's low maintenance and fast pickup.

I've owned both in multiple years, the answer is pretty easy. With the Everest (titanium) , you get better technology, many more cool features, more plush interior and ride, for the same money. I would go with the Everest if you aren't planning on keeping it for more than say 3-4 years (Be ready for a higher loss of value compared to Fortuner, especially when it falls out of its warranty period). BUT... if you wanna go for the long haul far beyond warranty, the easy choice is definitely Toyota, for the many reasons stated in this thread. Lastly, if you like upgrades, accessories and stuff, Ford electronics are complicated to be messed with, while Toyota is simpler and easier and more upgrade friendly. Hope all that helps, good luck.

Isuzu much more cheaper.

Service and parts.

Ford expensive for parts and service.

Toyota built strong & to last , Ford very comfortable but rubbish engine ok if you sell every 3yrs wen warranty runs out.

Get a European car, toyota is a truck in disguise, it’s not a proper 4x4, I doubt it even has air suspension!
John-Paul ******
Get the Toyota. It will not let you down over a lot of years. Ford is crap. Tranny issues and the engine has oil issues. The Toyota lasts longer and take better care of your wallet! Had both... take my advice!
Alfred *****
The wife is clearly way ahead of you . Toyota's are known for their reliability and the average miles it will last is close to

0 miles , half a million kilometres, if they are given their regular maintenance, nothing fancy , just change engine oil and coolant levels . check it up on every consumer mag and tests ..
Martin *********
Why are you even bothering to ask? Settle for peace and quiet and get the Fortuner.
Tony *********
The comments on here about the Toyota being the correct choice I've seen before. But if you want to learn a lot more join Thailand based groups for both types of vehicle. You will also get a lot of information from Thais as well.

Good luck 👍🏼🍀🤞🏼

Can't go wrong with the FORTUNER I had to choose which way to go too. The Fourtuner is dated and needs a face lift which I think they are doing next year but probably will not even be close to opions on the Ford Everest. The biggest reason for not choosing the Fortuner was the two fold up back seats. By the way we sold a fortuner to buy the Ford Everest 3.0 V6 model which has more options first time sold in Thailand this years although made here the last 3 years. Yes parts are more for the Ford and probably are harder to come bye. I love the air conditioning seats in our model Platinum model. Love the way it drives and comfortable seats and fold down seats in the rear. But make up your own mind and do your own research.

My mate has an Everest.

I was sat in the back and when i put my arm on the arm rest the window went down.

The switch is too far back and should be further forward.

Ford design fault IMO.

My pride and joy is a 2007 Fortuner with 450,000 km on the clock. Just fitted the 3rd set of Bridgestones and 4th battery. It's never let me down and apart from changing oils and filters, I've not spent a penny on it.

My wife has a new Isuzu MU-X. To keep within our budget figure, we chose an Active which came out at ฿1,080,000, and it's a hell of a car for the money. So far, I'm really impressed.

I can't personally speak about the Ford, but a pal has one, and he's forever moaning about the running costs.

I suppose I'm a Toyota man, because they're undoubtedly the most reliable, they're the cheapest to maintain and they're best for residual value.

Toyota 💯💯💯💯🏆

Listen to she. Toyota's are a investment. Ford's are a liability.
Ally ************
As others have already pointed out.. parts for any US/European car are very expensive in Thailand.. compared to any of the Japanese marques that is.. but added to this you'll find independent garages will shy away from tackling repairs on a Ford.. mainly because they don't have the knowledge base and lack the experience.. whereas they can handle literally any repair on a Japanese car.. so driving a Ford means you will become tied to main dealer servicing forever.. and sadly the standard of service from the main dealers here in CM is appalling.. and I'm speaking from personal experience! Ps. I'd also consider an Isuzu M-ux or Mitsubishi Pajero.
Sumeth ***********
In Thailand, always go with the Group who has a larger market share, so as to ensure good after sales service, especially in terms of spare parts availability...Conclusion go for Toyota....
Dave ********
In the US, Toyota has the best reliability and resale value of all. They skimp on "features" because they don't want complex gadgets that will go bad quickly. They aren't the best in fuel economy. Worldwide, however, they oversee their manufacturing quality co trol regardless of the country of manufacture. I bought a Ford Ranger here in Thailand but I've only had it for 2 years so I can't say much about the long-term concerns. From my US experience though, I'd say to go with the Toyota
Jim ********

I'm no expert but reviews seem to say stay away from bio cam belts (timing chains are better anyway), oil pumps that drain quickly during an oil change and dual clutches. If these mechanical type of issues are important to you, speak to a good experienced mechanic as to whether any are applicable to vehicles in Thailand.
Steven ******
I wouldn't write of the Isuzu MU-X. The Thais swear by Toyota and Isuzu for their reliability. I'm going to make a very similar choice next year when I've finished paying for my D-MAX. I use a Toyota pick up truck daily during my job driving off road through the desert, the thing really is faultless. All of the same cars are available here in Libya as in Thailand but I'm not exaggerating when I say 90% of thr cars are toyotas. So here is my input. I currently drive an Isuzu which is really well built, a little cheaper than the toyota and a lot cheaper than the ford. When I change my car next year I'll be looking mainly at Isuzu and Toyota for the 7 seater SUV. I can't deny that the Ford Everest, especially the sport is the best looking but there is a reason why so many people choose Toyota all over the world. Happy car shopping, it's one of my favourite things!

Nothing but problems since we purchased a ford pinto in the late 70’s and believe it or not it was the transmission. Then a ford tempo around 1984. After only 4000 km we started having issues and ford tried billing us for these repairs. We never purchased a ford again. They missed out on at least 40 new car purchases in our family since. My friend also purchased a new ford in the 90’s that required an engine replacement after only 6 months. They gave him a loaner for 8 months while they tried to replace the engine. Unfortunately the loaner was junk compared to what he purchased and had been paying the bank for those 8 months. FORD = Found On Road Dead. Toyota 100%!

Both the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Everest are considered reliable vehicles, but some say the Everest is the better car. Here's some related information about these vehicles:

Reliability

Some say the Fortuner is a reliable car, and that Toyota is a good choice. However, one Reddit user says they had to sell their Everest due to mechanical problems and a lack of spare parts.

Comparison

Some say the Everest is the better car after test driving both. Others say the Fortuner has a better engine and is more economical, while the Everest has a more comfortable interior.

The Ford Everest generally has more safety features than the Toyota Fortuner:

Safety features

The Everest has a range of safety features that the Fortuner doesn't match, even in its top-of-the-range model.

Cabin design

The Everest has a modern cabin design, while the Fortuner's cabin looks dated in comparison.

Standard features

The Everest's base model has a generous list of standard features, including a large touchscreen and digital instrument cluster.
