Well that went ok,. Mae sot border bounce,. Came into thailand on a 60 day tr visa, extended for another 30 at Kamphaeng Phet imigration office, due to expire on 22/2/23 so went to nearest border to me, Mae sot, left home at midday and arrived Mae sot 3pm, (border open 0630 to 1830) first mistake was following the main (big) no 2 friendship bridge signs, gets there and it’s a massive border post with hundreds of trucks at it, after about 15 minutes driving/walking around (very little signage) and asking various people about how to proceed with a border bounce and being met with blank faces, eventually found an imo officer, only to be told they don’t do public visa,s at this post, told to go to no 1 border post (the old friendship bridge)a few kms away, gets there, parks car at entrance to border post, walk in and get directed to the main immigration office 100 yards further on as you walk onto bridge (not allowed to drive car over and back) go into IM office only 2/3 officers inside as it was nice and quiete, fill out a TM6 go to imo departure counter, photo and fingerprints taken, and gets stamped out of thailand, walk across the bridge 5 minuite walk, come up to mayammar border post to be greeted by an official looking fellow who enquires what do you want ?,. tells him it’s a stamp in and out of Myanmar , he gets another imo to take your passport off you and 500 bht disappears and comes back 5 minuites later with myanmar entry and exit stamp,. I ask to why it was 500 bht, as I thought it was 300 bht to be met by more blank stares !,.I’m assuming it’s 200 bht for the fixer that he splits with the imo officer, and 300 bht to the proper channels, anyway, walk back over bridge and go back into same office as before, fill in another TM6 go to arrivals counter, photo and finger prints taken again, stamped back into thailand 45 days out the door and walk back to car and away,. My very 1st border bounce, done and dusted in about an hour, next one due 6/4/23 but may do it on 31/3/23 to get another 45 days instead of the 30 days if it goes back to the old system on 1/4/23,. Thai imo was telling me it can be really busy at this post with Myanmar people crossing especially during Songkhran period, i guess I got lucky, as only 2/3 people in front of me during the whole process,. “ word of warning” 2nd mistake,DONT take any photos inside building as its frowned upon, I didn’t see any “ no cameras” signs, and thought I would take a couple of snaps to post on here to help future “ bouncers” I got busted and had to delete 2 photos and told its a big No no, a couple of wais and much apology and stated it wasn’t signed as a no photo area, apparently if they want to,they can show you the door, so be warned,. My bad !

If we need to stay in Thailand 75 days , which way shall we do the best to stay here? (Chiangmai)
Graham ******
@Phueng ****
When do you plan to arrive as until 31-Mar certain passports get a 45 day entry stamp which can be extended once for a further 30 days? From 1-Apr it is likely to return to 30 days on entry.

To be safe you should get a Tourist Visa (60 days) and one extension (30 days)

It is strange that the 2nd bridge still isn't operating for normal travelers (yet it was being used to repatriate Thais and Burmese to their respective countries AND during the first few months of the Covid border closures, traders were using the bridge to travel between Mae Sot and Myawaddy) yet now we're back to the old ridiculous system that applied when the new bridge opened in late 2019, which is that it's only for trucks despite being set up with all the facilities for buses, cars and ordinary travelers.

It was like a ghost town at no2 bridge with all the imo booths empty, I walked about for ten minuites looking for an imo, eventually found a helpful lady imo in an office all on her own, all the car/bus toll type booths were empty also, really busy with freight tho,.I wouldn’t fancy walking over no2 bridge for a stamp,. It’s massive,.even no1 bridge is partially maned,

@Mike *******
They built those booths for nothing. I don't think they'll ever be used. Myanmar is very risk averse; they're not interested in freely allowing tourists with their own cars across, so the 1st bridge, which allows vehicles across on day visits, does the job adequately.
Paul *******
I've taken many photos at both ends of this bridge without incident. What I haven't done is to take a close up picture of the immigration counters, but of the road or the bridge no issue.

The bridge only recently reopened, so the Songkran being busy thing is irrelevant, the last time you could cross between the two countries during Songkran was in 2019.

You can drive across the bridge but this is presumably not allowed at present for farang since we're not allowed to linger in Myawaddy. We can only do a border run for the time being. This might change in about a months time according to rumors.

Don’t like to worry anyone but this year I have had 3 extensions and border bounced by air the remainder and have essentially livedThailand since April 2022.Last week when I came in from a week in SG at BKK I was stopped and challenged by the officer and supervisor allowed in as I had a flight to Europe for 4 days later by luck. Supervisor told me directly get the right visa marriage, LTR even tourist but don’t rely on this approach

Nice! Any idea how many land crossings are allowed per year?

I think it's 2 per year

Or, USD$10 (better deal).

It's been 500 BAHT for the last ten years...you have to pay for the privilege of being able to return in an hour ...it's been my bounce for ten years ...never any problems
Paul *******
Its either US$10 or 500 Baht. Nothing to do with the "privilege" of being able to return in an hour, this is Myanmar immigration policy. You have no choice now but to return immediately as the Burmese side is NOT allowing foreigners to visit its side. Only Thais are permitted and even they're limited to day trips within a 12km radius of the border. Previously, we foreigners from 3rd countries were subjected to the same rules. It is expected that we will soon be allowed to visit Myawaddy again, just like Thais are and once the security situation improves, Myanmar visas should be allowed to be used for proper entry/exit using land borders too. I expect foreigners to be allowed access to Myawaddy beginning in around a month from now, based on rumors. Proper visa based entry and exit may have to wait some time though...

Glad to hear it is actually open

I used to live in Mae Sot. I found out that farangs typically don't have to wait in line. I thought it would take hours to get to the counter, coming back into Thailand, but the immigration officer instructed somebody to bring me to the front of the line, and everyone else waiting acted unfased by it . Being a foreigner in Mae Sot has it's perks. Just an FYI in case you go back there again.
Paul *******
@Whitt ******
They have separate lines for Burmese and Thais/foreigners. We've never been expected to wait in the same long line as the Burmese. In fact, at this border there is even a separate queue for Chinese!! Thai immigration recognizes that there are (well, pre-Covid anyway) tons of Chinese heading to the dodgy casinos and human trafficking operations at Shwe Kokko.

The only problem with Mae sot is the roller coaster ride to get there,. From Tak direction is a pretty good road, but its duelled all the way but a challenging drive for the feint hearted, don’t come from Mae sariang if your in a hurry either, I left Mae sot at 5 pm and got to Mae sariang 3-4 hours later, hard slog made even harder at night, I’ve come from Mae sariang to Mae sot in daylight and it didn’t seem to bad,.it’s way better now than it was years ago tho,.pretty scenic if it weren’t for the smoke covered mountains,on both routes,.

@Mike *******
4-5 hours is what it used to take 10 years ago when the section north of Tha Song Yang was narrow and potholed. Now it's 3 hours, perhaps 3.5-4 if you make a few stops.
Whitt *******
@Mike *******
if you made Mae Sot to Mae Sariang in 3-4 hours, then I would say you made very good time.
Paul *******
@Whitt ******
If it takes any longer then something is seriously wrong. It's only 210km and while there are some twists and turns, there are barely any traffic lights, any traffic in general and the road is now in great condition most of the way, except sometimes during the rainy season when there's a mudslide or partial collapse of a section of road. 70km/h average and it takes 3 hours, yet on many straight stretches you can easily do 100km/h.

counters open and 6 people in line,. Do they pick you out, or do you see an imo ?
Whitt *******
@Mike *******
it was very crowded when I went through, March 2020, elbow to elbow and hundreds waiting. They noticed me waiting in the back of the pack, sent someone to pluck me and bring me straight to the front of the line.
Paul *******
@Whitt ******
In March 2020, did the Burmese side force you to take a Covid test on arrival? I remember reading on Trip Advisor that that was mandatory or you couldn't enter Myanmar. This was implemented starting a couple of weeks prior to the border closing.
Whitt *******
@Paul ******
I did not. I don't think COVID tests existed at this point, as this was only 1.5 months after COVID started. After this border run, I got the COVID extensions which kept me in the kingdom until my departure home.
Paul *******
@Whitt ******
Well, a guy on TripAdvisor said he entered Myawaddy on March 8, 2020 and was required to get tested on arrival. Note this is only the Burmese side. The Thai side never had such requirements at land borders prior to them closing. What they did do after March 15, 2020 aside from changing the entry requirements virtually every single day, was require a "fit to fly" certificate but as the name suggests, this is only for arrival by air.
Whitt *******
@Paul ******
I doubt the validity of the story. When I crossed over (March 5, 2020) I didn't even see any masks.
Paul *******
@Whitt ******
Besides, as you should well know, Covid restrictions tightened by the day in many cases.

Case in point - I crossed into Myanmar at Kanchanaburi on February 4, 2020 and there were no plastic screens, no temperature screening. On my return at the same border on Feb 11, 2020, the Myanmar side had put up screens, while the Thai side was doing thermal temperature screening on entering (though not on exit).

I crossed into Laos and back in early March 2020, where there was none of this, despite being just 2 weeks before the borders shut completely. However, both Thai and Lao officials started to wear masks, but not travelers.
Paul *******
@Whitt ******
I'm sure it's a truthful story. Yes, masks were rare in Myanmar especially at the beginning of Covid. They weren't even that common in rural Thailand either. You did start to see immigration officials wearing them.

Funnily enough now, 9 months after the end of mask mandates in Thailand, there are more masks being worn than back in early March 2020, though most Thai immigration officials posted at land borders no longer wear them, since my first post-Covid land border crossing that took place in November 2022, to Cambodia. I've since crossed 6 different land borders with 3 different countries and the ones with the most mask wearing was Nong Khai-Vientiane, though even there, few officials were wearing one.
