I have never heard anyone being asked for old expired passport when they have never been to Thailand before.

My guess would be that the school she enrolled with is not a serious one which made the embassy react or she didnt have the correct paperwork from the school.

If he has the flight out after one night and his ticket out of the country on his last entry I dont see why you need to worry.

He is a genuin tourist and not living here on back to back exemptions or touristvisas.

He can perpare with having 20,000 Baht in cash and confirmed lodging for his stay in Thailand.
