Hi there, my partner has just received a big fat Ed VOID stamp in her UK passport from the embassy in HCMC. Was trying to get the 90 day visa for studying Thai language for 6 months. She had flewn into thailand on a Tourist 30day exempt and paid for a 30 day extension. No previous travel to Thailand. They wanted to see her old passport which she did not have on her, she was able to show a photo of the main passport page details but not of every single page. We are wondering what our next steps should be.. She already has a flight back to Chiang Mai booked for Sunday. Will she encounter any problems getting in as a tourist again? And is it possible for her to go to a different embassy (with her old passport) and try again? What would you recommend next steps? Thanks in advance for your advice :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice about their partner's situation after she received a VOID stamp on her ED visa application while applying for a 90-day language study visa at the embassy in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). They are concerned about her ability to re-enter Thailand as a tourist and are wondering about the possibility of applying for a new visa at a different embassy. The thread includes various user comments discussing best practices, potential reasons for the rejection, and the importance of having old passports when applying for visas.

And with that i just close it, yes there are a lot of comments, if you are interested please read them before you start to ask what already is mentioned. If you have any value to add, you know contact the Admins or moderators and ask to re-open the topic. At the moment there is nothing to add, visa is denied, new application must be made.Good luck.

A lot of comments on here. I have no idea why she was denied, but just putting another idea out there......Williams is a very common name. Could they have searched the system, found another Williams with the same first name who had been here before, and then either got confused or became skeptical that she hadn't been to Thailand before.......Either way nobody will ever know so it doesn't really matter why it happened....So best to follow Benjamin's advice or what Robert just posted.....PS I saw you're studying at Manna Thai. I studied with them up until recently in Chiang Rai. One of my classmates went to HCMC a couple of months back and also got rejected and had massive issues, albeit for a 2nd year, not 1st year ED Visa. Might just be a coincidence though..... :)

How did she get her old passport??
Robert *******
She can apply at the same Consulate for the Single Entry Tourist Visa or visit another consulate for that. I guess she did not get all the documents back used for application for the visa, so if she likes to try again for the Non Immigrant ED visa, she has to visit the school first and get all the documents again

It stays an amazing story, but answers are not given other then boss want and I asked my passport back because I wanted to leave and that was simply the reason for the normal stamp Void without prejudice. Not an extra big fat stamp, just a normal stamp as you could not provide what was asked and wanted to leave. I still not believe you need all your old passports to apply for an ED visa in HCMC, if the story is correct I will never ever be able to apply for a visa as one of my passport got lost in Tsunami. The other 14 are destroyed by my Government when i applied for a new one.

@Robert ******
yes well, if we had known they were going to request it. She would have taken the old passport with her.

Thank you to

for replying with friendly advice instead of accusations. We are as confused as the rest of you and this is the whole truth. I am a New Zealander and I have two old passports with the corners cut as that is the process here and I too keep them purely for sentimental value I guess.
Benjamin ******
You should *ALWAYS* keep your old passports, not for sentimental reasons, but for identify protection. If you want to get rid of them, destroy them through a professional service.

I have never heard anyone being asked for old expired passport when they have never been to Thailand before.

My guess would be that the school she enrolled with is not a serious one which made the embassy react or she didnt have the correct paperwork from the school.
Jennifer *********
I'm wondering why they wanted to see the old passport if there was no previous travel to Thailand.

@Holly *********
, I'm sorry but I have never heard of this happening before. The only reason that I can think of is that the educational institution on your application is on Thai immigration radar for some reason. Did you use an agency?

@Jennifer ********
I have no idea. I just came to collect after leaving my application over night. When I arrived the woman at the desk said my boss wants to see your old passport...to which I replied....my OLD passport. I though I misheard several times. They told me to keep trying to find it to which I said this is not possible for me to get hold of it right now, they just said keep trying until I eventually said I need my current passport back so I can leave.

Unless she is entitled to hold 2 UK passports, her old passport is voided when she applied for her new one.
Ron *******
Jane Coote provided she can clear Thai immigration, she can enter as a tourist. She will require new paperwork from her school addressed to a new consulate.

Now, whether or not the voided visa will cause another denial is another thing entirely.

I suspect Laos may not be an option for another application.

@Ron ******
I have one valid UK passport. I have the old passport, they sent it back to me with a cut on the front page I guess to show that it’s an old passport. The old passport expiry date was 2018. No fake passports that is not how I roll.

@Ron ******
and no reason to carry it either after her stamp/s have been transferred over if it was obtained inside Thailand
Robert *******
Somehow i did read this story earlier today. How can you leave your old passport inside Thailand, fly out to HCMC without using the old passport to show what kind of visa or stamp you are allowed to be inside Thailand and without getting the exit stamp from Thailand. I guess she is denied a Visa due to showing a fake passport. You can delete this topic again, and let another friend try again later, but the question and fact remain, you can not fly out Thailand as a foreigner with a never used passport and without getting at least an exit stamp.
Robert *******
I guess it all went wrong when with the application form, you apply for a Single Entry Non Immigrant ED visa an that is not a 6 months visa. a Question get asked and the whole Australian story, phone copies of rental contracts which all has nothing to do with what is asked went in a spiral down and ended up with denied entry.
Robert *******
What ever you try to distract us with your stories about Australia, rental contracts, files on phone, I still can not understand that you handed over your documents from your school, your passport and the staff ask your old passport?
Robert *******
So you applied with a passport issued in the UK in Jan 2018, in this passport just 1 Visa Exempt entry of 30 days and 1 Extension of Stay of 30 days and the Thai Consulate ask to see your old passport? Never heard of that
Holly *******
@Robert ******
my new passport was issued jan 2018.

On my old passport I had never been to Thailand.

My first entry to Thailand was September 2019 using my updated passport. In the UK they give you your old passport back but cut the corner to show it’s no longer valid.

So I have my first entry into Thailand September 2019 which was 30 days and I extended for another 30 days and applied for the 6 month ED visa.

I did not realise they would want to see my old passport at the embassy so it is at home in my documents folder which is currently in Thailand from my entry in September 2019 as the plan was to hopefully have the ED visa accepted. I came here with just a small bag because I had all the documents listed. My new passport is perfectly valid it was my phrasing of my experience that caused confusion. I kept my old passport because I did not just want to throw a passport away. I was able to show a scan of the front page of my passport because I have lived in Australia for 5 years on a fully accepted permanent visa. I have emails with the scan and so I was able to pull that out of my sent mail but I do not have photos of every single page.

I hope this makes sense now.

Robert Lagas I understood it to mean that she entered Thailand with her current passport but since it was relatively new they wanted to see her old passport too.

It's common practice to carry both the old and new passports for a while after a changeover.

I think they suspect that she has a substantial history staying in Thailand but they cannot see it at the embassy without looking at her old passport.
