What's your recent visa history? If it's just a one off, it shouldn't be a problem. I used that border at least a dozen times and never had an issue. Just make sure to have 20k in cash, a booked flight and a hotel booking for a few days.

I think that it's due to the large number of expats, especially the retired ones. They mostly socialize with each other and rarely venture into local communities. It’s the diaspora effect... That said, this is a widespread phenomena all over the world and isn't unique to Thailand.

This is nothing new. The Thai government tightened its visa rules about 15 years ago, prior to which people were literally staying for years on back to back visa exemptions. Over the course of that time, I've had some friends who were refused entry, or given only a week to pack up, unless they get a proper long term visa. I myself experienced one occasion during which immigration officials advised me to stop using tourist visas. You'll probably get a tourist visa when applying to a regional consulate, but your 'tourist days' are definitely coming to an end. Note that getting the visa doesn't equate to immigration officials letting you in.

Check with your immigration office... They're the ones applying these rules.

The government has the identical official stance for both visas in terms of provenances of sums, as clearly stated here

The immigration offices that don't apply this rule, probably don't care to apply it for both. After all, there is zero reason to have different regulations.
