Can you share the name of the driving school? I just tried to take a class in the U.S. and it was terrible. One of the instructors was wonderful, but one was downright abusive which was too distracting. I walked out. I thought it was dangerous to deal with it.
I have to second this recommendation. Siem Reap is one of my favorite places and just over an hour’s flight from Bangkok. A great tuk-tuk driver also makes the world of difference. There’s a Cambodia fb group that talks about the tuk tuk drivers frequently (& obviously thus has archives) if you decide to go, Natalie.
I plan to be doing that then later settling in. I plan to explore both within SE Asia (still need to see the Philippines and want to return to some favorites) and outside. I will also probably need to return to the States (ugh! Long flights) at least once in that time.
I’m in the States. I hope they don’t do that to me. I’m more winging it with my travel. I’m far from a backpacker, but I like to keep my mind open as to where I want to visit next.
sorry, I deleted my comment before seeing yours. I just found the info online by searching specifically for this option. I’m glad you commented though. It doesn’t mention the ability to extend it longer. I’m trying to find the best option for a longer term “stay” where I’m planning to be traveling much of the time. This seems like a good option rather than a long stay visa with all its hoops.
Also, it's not an "international driver's license". That's a misnomer. It's an "international driver's permit" (aka "IDP") and it augments one's license from their home country. My question was whether one needed a motorcycle endorsement (also casually referred to as a license in casual speech, but actually something that augments one's driver's license) from their home country in order to drive in motor bike in Thailand. This is unrelated to the need for an IDP which is, of course, necessary if using a foreign license. This would be necessary if Thailand has separate licensing for motor bikes. THAT was my question.
Meanwhile, my question was not about driving in Thailand. It was about obtaining a license. While driving in Thailand requires one to have an IDP, TECHNICALLY, according to the Thai embassy, one does not need an IDP to obtain a Thai license IF the home country's license is in English OR if one obtains a translation from their embassy. However, I don't know why someone would go to Thailand and not drive until they could obtain a license when bringing an IDP is so simple...I suppose it's possible.
