What should I do about the new 800,000 baht requirement for my Thai visa?

I just went to immigration today for my 90 day check-in. He told me that this year the rules changed so I must have 800,000 baht in the bank now and not 800,000 combined income and bank account. He will connect me with someone who will loan me the money for a day to cover the difference. Of course, I will pay interest. What can I do?

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat faced new immigration rules requiring 800,000 baht in a bank account instead of a combined income and bank account for a visa extension during a 90-day check-in. Alternatives suggested by the community included going to a different immigration office, using online procedures, or hiring a local agent. Many participants expressed skepticism towards the new requirement, considering it a potential scam or inconsistency in immigration practices. The situation was further complicated due to the participant's visa having expired, prompting discussions on possible solutions, including leaving Thailand and applying anew.

800,000 baht, yes, usually.

Depending upon where you are from you may be able to get the retirement visa (O-A) in your home country, and the Thai embassy there may just ask you for your financial information from your local bank accounts and income streams, and if they give you the O-A that gives you time to possibly work your way into meeting the requirements for the 65,000 Baht monthly deposit option (but I forget if that is a 6 month or 1 year record of monthly deposits, so you may need to come to Thailand first for a couple of months, open a bank account, then go home and start the O-A process while making monthly 65K deposits to 'prime' the process.

The other option is arriving here on a tourist visa and try to convert to an 'O' visa (same as an O-A with same financial requirements, although no insurance requirements,so depending on your need for health insurance would make for a cheaper, if not very wise, option.) Also be aware that arriving on a tourist visa and converting in Thailand is not ' a given', they may turn you around and tell you to apply from your home country ... a good immigration agent, or lawyer (at a cost of probably 25K and up Baht, might make that option more viable, but still probably safer to go the O-A route frim your home country.

The above is all just my opinion, do your own research since there's chance I could be wrong.

Sounds ludicrous

A 90 day visa check has nothing to do with having or needing 800'000bht in the bank. That is only req'd in some form for a 1yr renewal

So as of now you have no visa ? If so you must leave Thailand ASAP, if you get caught before leaving you will get an immediate detention and 5 yr ban.

Key word is his visa expired. So I would guess he has to start from the beginning all over.

This thread has hurt my head. 🤣 So, the visa has expired, so you need to start over with 800,000 in the account, whenever or however you can get that. Wouldn't you need to leave the country for a bit?

The 800k has nothing to do with the 90 day report. Either you've misunderstood - maybe the official means when you renew your visa you need 800k - or you're being scammed.

Which immigration office did you go to?

What visa are you on?

You sound completely confused. I assume you mean you tried to do a 90 day report and then discovered your extension of stay had already expired which means you have been on overstay since it did. That normally carries a 500 baht per day fine.

What visa did you originally have and have been extending for the last 3 years, was it a Non-O visa or a Non-OA visa? This is important and will determine whether you need insurance or not?

You need to use the office where you live for your extension, do you have the money required for the extension or not? Only some offices allow the combination method I'd just ask them for their handout highlighting their requirements and see what it says.
Will **********

@John *********
Yes, I owe 3,500 as of today. O-A, I need insurance, but bribes have eliminated that need. I cannot make the difference 'tween my bank and the 800,000 baht.
John **********
@Will *********
sounds like you have no option but to pay your overstay fine, leave the country and start over. But you will need 800k baht in the bank to apply for an in country Non-O visa, on the bright side it has no insurance requirement.

Brandon ************
@Will *********
easiest would be to leave Thailand without a re-entry permit and enter on a fresh stamp. Then apply for a new non-O visa that has no insurance requirement. This would require 800,000 in a Thai bank account if that's the rule of the province your reside. Then you'll be able to get the 1 year extension with the same.
Will **********

you need a TM30 from the province you want to use showing you reside there. Some offices may also require a rental contract for a long term extension.

hi Brandon I hope you don't mind me jumping on this, Will is a good friend of mine and you have given me very helpful advice in the past. Will is on an o-a visa which has unfortunately expired he has over 500,000 in the bank and monthly credits of 40,000 baht our immigration officer told Will you can't have the combined option as the law has changed??? I'm willing to take him to another immigration office khon kaen probably be the nearest, would this be the best option? many thanks John

Frank-Steven ***********
Turn the annoying inconsistencies between offices and officers into your advantage. Try first: Go another day, hoping for another officer. If that does not work, go to another office in another district. This is the general fix for issues at the immigration office, imho.
Wayne *******
@Frank-Steven **********
how do you do this on a retirement visa? Can only go to one in your district?
Frank-Steven ***********
@Wayne ******
"Your" district is the district in which you last reported your address, I presume? So, going to another district, checking into a hotel, making sure that hotel does the TM.30 reporting should give one the necessary "proof" of current residency in that new district. I know, painful, but sometimes immigration office shopping for more reasonable procedures is the best option.
Wayne *******
@Frank-Steven **********
ahh yep ok... Can work but without going into to much detail it can backfire, but luckily Thailand can overcome most problems with a wink and slip of an envelope lol
