I got my 90 day evisa and was not required to have a return flight. Again this could be the type of visa you are applying for and embassy rules

there is no 1 year tourist visa. At most you get 60 to 90 days and then you have to border run.

Currently in the process of staying in Thailand long term this May. So yes my words are from recent experiences and dealing with the Thai Embassy and Banks.

if you are doing it by yourself; a tourist visa will not work 90% of the time, at not least in Bangkok. The laws have changed last year around June. You now need a Non-O visa or property(condo), to open a bank account.

Very hard especially in Bangkok to nearly impossible. The Banks want you to be on a Non O visa to open Bank Account
